In Rated A: Soft-Porn Cinema and Mediations of Desire in India, scholar Darshana Sreedhar Mini examines Malayalam soft-porn cinema as an industry and a social world—not simply a collection of films. Her study follows the genre’s histories and circulation while asking how labour, gender, anonymity, censorship and stigma shaped ideas about sexuality and desire.
What Rated A is about
The book centres on Malayalam soft-porn cinema, especially its production boom in Kerala during the 1990s, while tracing a wider history of the genre. Mini connects local influences—including vernacular pulp fiction and illustrated erotic tales—with American exploitation cinema. She also follows the films beyond the screen, including their circulation among blue-collar South Asian workers in the Middle East and the informal distribution of pirated material. University of California Press describes the book’s scope.
That approach shifts attention from judging the films solely by their sexual content to understanding the conditions in which they were made, circulated and interpreted. Mini treats soft-porn cinema as an industrial formation embedded in social relations, with public meanings shaped by sexuality, import policy and censorship.
Why labour, gender and anonymity matter
Production labour is central to the book’s account. The work involved not only performers but also makeup artists, production assistants and cameramen; the UC Press feature also describes Gulf migrants as silent partners in the production ecology. Some technicians used fictitious names, while women stars could become highly visible in contrast to the often-anonymous crew.

Mini describes the resulting imbalance this way: “The ecology of soft porn film production was so steeped in anonymity or pseudonymous practices that even real names were sometimes mistaken as fake ones. And in a context where the crew sought anonymity, the hypervisibility of the female star replaced the filmic author.” The quotation appears in UC Press’s feature on the book.
This focus also complicates the stigma attached to performers and the genre. Mini writes: “Considering soft porn as disrespectful and actors who were part of this as of questionable morals, should not dissuade us from considering questions of labour in the industry.” The point is not to erase moral judgments or the unequal conditions performers faced, but to make labour and gender part of the analysis rather than treating them as incidental.

How Mini researched the subject
The University of Wisconsin–Madison profile describes Mini’s project as archival and ethnographic research tracing Malayalam cinema from the 1970s through the 2000s. The profile identifies her as an Assistant Professor of Film at UW–Madison.
A 2025 UC Press feature says the project grew out of sex-education research and involved a decade of travel and research across Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Dubai. Mini worked with archives, conducted dozens of interviews and briefly worked as a dubbing artist to gain an insider perspective. The book was written and published before the Hema Committee report was released in 2024; in the feature, Mini describes the report as a place where survivors could register grievances. That is context for the interview, not a claim that the book addresses the report.
