Its story follows Princess Ellian as she tries to save her family after a spell transforms her parents into monsters. Netflix lists the U.S. release on its service and in select theaters as November 22, 2024; check Netflix in your country for current availability.
What is Spellbound about?
Ellian, the young daughter of Lumbria’s rulers, faces a family crisis when a mysterious spell changes Queen Ellsmere and King Solon into monsters. After they escape the palace, Ellian sets out to undo the spell and protect both her family and the kingdom. Netflix’s synopsis leaves room for a more complicated outcome: even if Ellian succeeds, the experience may have changed her family.

That gives the fairy-tale adventure a family-centered premise rather than making it only a quest to break a curse. Jenson told Netflix Tudum, “If we start with the familiar — the kingdom, a princess, a king, a queen, and a spell — we could use that to express the story of this family.”
Where can I watch Spellbound?
Netflix lists Spellbound as streaming on Netflix and records its U.S. Netflix and select-theater release date as November 22, 2024. Availability can vary by country and may change, so check the title’s listing in your local Netflix catalogue rather than assuming it is available everywhere.

Who voices the characters?
Rachel Zegler voices Ellian. The principal cast also includes Nicole Kidman as Queen Ellsmere, Javier Bardem as King Solon, John Lithgow as Minister Bolinar and Flink, Jenifer Lewis as Minister Nazara, Nathan Lane as Luno, and Tituss Burgess as Sunny. Luno and Sunny are oracles with contrasting personalities.
Who directed and made the film?
Vicky Jenson directed Spellbound. Netflix identifies her as a director of Shrek and Shark Tale; that connection is about Jenson’s previous work, not a link between Spellbound and the Shrek franchise.
Rank #2
Netflix lists Lauren Hynek, Elizabeth Martin, and Julia Miranda as writers. John Lasseter, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Bruce Anderson produced the film for Skydance Animation. Netflix’s 2023 announcement described Spellbound as the first feature under its multi-picture agreement with Skydance Animation. That announcement said Pookoo was planned to follow in 2025; it was a plan stated at the time, not confirmation of current release plans.
Who wrote the music?
Alan Menken composed the original score, and Glenn Slater wrote the lyrics. Netflix notes their long-running partnership, linking Menken to Beauty and the Beast and Slater to Tangled. Those credits provide context for the film’s musical lineage, but they are not a substitute for judging its songs.

What kind of film is it?
Spellbound brings familiar fairy-tale ingredients—a kingdom, a princess, royal parents, and a spell—into a contemporary family story. The available official descriptions establish its animated fantasy and musical elements, but do not provide a basis for ranking it against other animated musicals.
Netflix identifies itself as the streaming platform, while its stated November 22, 2024 date is specifically for the U.S. Netflix and select-theater release. The cited official information does not establish present availability in every region or specify physical media formats.
