Laufey describes herself as Icelandic-Chinese, and her account of identity is shaped by growing up in Iceland, her Chinese family, and finding a wider Asian community as an adult in the United States. She values being visible to young Asian fans—but has also warned that representation is incomplete if half-white Asian women are the only role models they see.
How does Laufey talk about being Icelandic-Chinese?
Laufey is an Icelandic-Chinese singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. The Laufey Foundation describes her as based in Los Angeles. Her identity is not simply an “Asian American” story: she grew up in Iceland and has lived in the United States as an adult.
In a 2023 interview with ELLE, Laufey said Iceland’s relative homogeneity left her feeling different and foreign. She knew she was half Chinese, spoke Chinese, and was raised by Chinese women, but said she did not fully connect with that part of her identity until she moved to the United States and encountered a broader Asian community. That is her description of her own experience, not a template for how mixed-heritage people experience belonging.
How did her Chinese heritage shape her musical upbringing?
In a 2021 AAPI Heritage Month Q&A with Atwood Magazine, Laufey said, “I was raised in a Chinese household and grew up surrounded by strong Asian women.” She connected that family environment with her own musical formation: “I feel that I owe a lot of my musicality to my Chinese heritage.” Her mother is a violinist, and her grandparents taught violin and piano at China’s Central Conservatory.

Those are personal family influences, as Laufey described them; they should not be generalized into claims about Chinese musical tradition as a whole. Her musical background also includes interests in jazz and pop. In ELLE’s 2025 profile, she said she hopes her music can serve as a gateway for listeners to discover jazz.
Did Laufey have Asian role models growing up?
Laufey has described a shortage of Asian role models in pop during her youth. In a 2025 ELLE interview, she recalled being the only Asian girl in her class and year in Iceland. She described her fan community as one she wished she had when she was younger, linking the welcome she hopes to create with her own earlier sense of isolation.

Her account does not imply that every fan identifies with her in the same way. It does show why visibility can matter: seeing an artist with a point of connection to one’s own life can offer recognition that was missing for her.
What has Laufey said about Asian representation in music?
In an interview with the Associated Press, published August 19, 2025, Laufey said, “I already see more representation, but there’s still such a long way to go. I’m still a half-white Asian woman, you know? And I don’t want young Asian women to look up and see all of the stars in front of them be half-White either, because what kind of message is that sending?”

The qualification is central to her point. Laufey values visibility while recognizing that her own experience cannot represent all Asian women, and that a narrow range of visible backgrounds is not enough. She has also emphasized lifting up voices, building communities, and empowering young Asian artists.
In her 2021 Atwood Q&A, she put the concern more broadly, saying, “There’s no question that the music industry lacks AAPI representation.” She called for making space where AAPI musicians feel accepted and represented, and for highlighting their stories throughout the year. This is Laufey’s assessment, not a quantified measure of the industry: the cited interviews do not establish a statistic for Asian representation in music.

How does music connect to audience and belonging?
For Laufey, community is part of the meaning of being visible. She has said her fans form a community she wishes she had growing up, while her music can invite listeners toward jazz. Those ideas sit alongside, rather than replace, her critique of limited representation: a welcoming audience matters, but it does not make one artist a stand-in for a diverse population.
The AP described A Matter of Time as Laufey’s third album and reported that it draws on country, Icelandic folk, classical, and bossa nova sounds. That range is context for her current work; the interview does not establish that the album’s genres are a direct result of her ethnicity.
