South Carolina’s amusement-park options range from Myrtle Beach’s seaside rides and water slides to seasonal water parks in Charleston County, Hartsville and Simpsonville. Carowinds is another major option for the Carolinas, but it is a Charlotte-area regional destination rather than a park located wholly in South Carolina. Operating seasons and admission terms vary, so check each park’s current calendar and ticket page before travelling.

Where to find rides and water parks
Myrtle Beach: classic rides or a water-park day
Family Kingdom is the clearest fit for a traditional amusement-park visit in Myrtle Beach. The operator describes it as a seaside park with more than 32 rides. Its Swamp Fox wooden roller coaster has been a local landmark since opening in 1966, and the park also highlights its 1923 Carousel and rides for families and children. Check ride-specific height guidance on the park’s ride pages before making plans with younger visitors.
Myrtle Waves offers a different kind of day, centered on slides, tubing, the FlowRider and play areas. Its 2026 season-pass page listed an additional $40 for an all-season FlowRider upgrade. That is a dated operator-published price, so confirm the current pass and upgrade terms before purchase.

Charleston County: several county-run choices
Charleston County Parks lists three facilities: Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark, Splash Zone Waterpark and Splash Island Waterpark. The county page reported Splash Island closed for the 2026 season and advertises individual and multi-park Splash Passes. Confirm the season dates, participating parks and pass conditions directly with the county, especially if your trip depends on a particular location being open.
Hartsville and Simpsonville: municipal and county recreation options
Neptune Island Waterpark is owned and operated by the City of Hartsville. Its official page reported that it shifted to weekends only beginning August 1 for the remainder of the 2026 season, illustrating why a general summer schedule may not describe late-season availability.

Discovery Island sits at Southside Park in Simpsonville. Greenville County Recreation lists slides, water attractions and concessions; its page marked the water parks closed for the season and published 2026 admission rates. It also says height restrictions are strictly enforced, so check requirements for specific rides when planning for children.
Carowinds: a regional border-area destination
Carowinds is marketed to North and South Carolina visitors and is in the Charlotte area. It is useful to consider for a broader Carolinas trip, but it should not be described as a park wholly within South Carolina. The operator says the park has more than 60 rides and that Carolina Harbor water park access is included with admission. Its official site also lists an on-site hotel and campground.

How to choose a park for your trip
- Choose by attraction type: Family Kingdom focuses on rides and coasters; Myrtle Waves, Charleston County’s parks, Neptune Island and Discovery Island are water-park options; Carowinds combines amusement rides with Carolina Harbor.
- Match the location to your itinerary: Myrtle Beach has two distinct park experiences, Charleston County has several county facilities, Hartsville and Simpsonville offer local water parks, and Carowinds is a Charlotte-area regional option.
- Check the actual operating calendar: Seasonal water parks may close for the year or reduce days late in the season. Confirm dates and hours on the operator’s current page rather than relying on a general seasonal description.
- Compare admission models: Family Kingdom lists wristbands, ride credits, group and eligible local or military options, and season passes. Myrtle Waves lists season passes and a FlowRider upgrade. Charleston County lists individual and multi-park Splash Passes. Eligibility, included attractions and prices may change.
- Check rider requirements: Family Kingdom publishes height guidance for rides, and Greenville County Recreation says Discovery Island height rules are strictly enforced. Verify requirements for the attractions your group plans to use.
- Consider overnight options only where relevant: Carowinds’ official overview lists a hotel and campground. The other destination pages cited here do not establish comparable lodging or camping offers.
Water-park oversight and safety context
The South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s Amusement Ride Frequently Asked Questions states: “No, the Office of Elevators and Amusement Rides does not regulate or inspect water parks, unless there are mechanical devices incorporated with the water park.” This describes the stated scope of that office’s FAQ; it should not be read as a broader conclusion about all water-park oversight or applicable safety rules. For a specific legal or safety question, consult current official requirements and the park directly.

South Carolina State Parks are a separate system of outdoor, historic and recreational sites, not a list of amusement or theme parks. The state parks homepage describes a system encompassing more than 90,000 acres of protected lands; that figure refers to the state-park system, not amusement attractions.
