What was reported as Sinéad O’Connor’s cause of death?
The Irish Independent reported in July 2024 that the death certificate listed the cause as “exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and bronchial asthma together with low grade lower respiratory tract infection.” The Los Angeles Times summarized the disclosure as COPD and asthma.

The exact medical wording is attributed here to the press report on the certificate; the certificate itself was not directly reviewed. The cited accounts do not establish additional contributing circumstances.
Why did the earlier announcement say “natural causes”?
O’Connor died in London on July 26, 2023, aged 56. In January 2024, Southwark Coroner’s Court confirmed that she had died of “natural causes” and that the coroner had ceased involvement. RTÉ reported that an autopsy had been directed because no medical cause was initially given.

The January statement was a general confirmation, not a detailed medical explanation. The later death-certificate reporting supplied the respiratory conditions, so the two accounts are not contradictory.

The more specific certificate wording appeared in press reports in July 2024, roughly one year after O’Connor’s death. The Irish Independent reported that the death was certified after a post-mortem examination and that there was no inquest. The Guardian also described the finding more briefly as COPD and asthma.
