She shared the more detailed memory in a 2021 episode of Simone vs Herself. Accounts of her biological mother’s circumstances and the children’s later placements come from reporting that attributes those details to Biles’s grandmother, Nellie—not from Biles’s quoted recollection about food.
What Biles recalled about food
In a 2021 episode of Simone vs Herself, Biles described food as a focus for her and her siblings: “Growing up, me and my siblings were so focused on food because we didn’t have a lot of food,” The Guardian reported.
She also recalled a cat being fed while she was hungry: “I remember there was this cat around the house and I would be so hungry. They would feed this cat and I would be like, ‘Where the heck is my food?’” This is Biles’s memory as quoted in the report, not an independently established account of every meal or the household’s overall circumstances.
How the 2017 account differs
An earlier account reported by NBC Sports on April 10, 2017, quoted Biles saying, “I do remember always being hungry and afraid” (NBC Sports). The 2017 statement is a separate, shorter recollection; the 2021 account adds her description of food scarcity and the cat. The two reports need not be read as conflicting.

What reporting says about her family background
The Guardian’s report attributes the account of Biles’s biological mother having difficulty caring for the children to Nellie Biles. That attribution matters: the article does not establish those circumstances as an independent finding, and Biles’s quoted remarks about hunger do not by themselves explain the full family situation.
The report says Simone and her younger sister, Adria, were adopted by their maternal grandparents, Nellie and Ronald Biles. Their two older siblings were adopted by their father’s sister. Simone and Adria moved to Texas; the older siblings remained in Ohio, according to the report. These family details provide context, but they should not be collapsed into the single childhood memory Biles described.
