In March 2025, The Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg was accidentally included in a Signal group chat where senior Trump administration officials discussed an impending U.S. operation against Houthi targets in Yemen. The leak prompted jokes about the journalist in the chat, officials texting about military action and Elon Musk being left out. Vladimir Putin’s connection was more indirect: it arose from a reported coincidence involving a chat participant’s trip to Moscow, not evidence that Putin was in the chat.
What happened in the Signal chat
The episode, widely called Signalgate, came as the United States prepared a new round of strikes against Yemen’s Houthis. According to the Associated Press, Goldberg was included in a Signal group with senior national-security officials. The Washington Post reported that the chat was created two days before the operation began on March 15, 2025.
The Houthis had attacked Red Sea container ships and oil tankers after the Israel-Hamas war began in October 2023, describing their actions as protest over Israel’s military operations. The United States and Britain had begun strikes against Houthi targets in January 2024. The March 2025 operation was a new round of U.S. strikes, according to the Post’s March 27 account.
What the messages reportedly contained
The Associated Press reported that the messages included a strike window, target location, timing, and details about weapons and aircraft. It said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth posted the precise timing of aircraft launches and bombs falling before the aircraft were airborne. Those descriptions concern the reported contents of the messages; they do not, by themselves, settle the separate question of how the government classified the information.

What officials said about the operation
The Post’s account of the published transcript says participants discussed restoring freedom of navigation and deterring attacks. Vice President JD Vance raised concerns about the timing and the possibility of “bailing Europe out again,” while saying he would support the consensus decision. The chat also included discussion of seeking European compensation. These were positions and ideas expressed in the conversation, not proof that compensation was secured or that every participant agreed with the stated rationale.
Were the messages classified war plans?
The classification question remained disputed in the reporting. The White House press secretary said no classified information had been posted. Hegseth denied sharing “war plans” and, as the AP reported, declined to say whether he had posted classified information. His separate remark, reproduced by the Daily Dot, was: “Nobody was texting war plans and that’s all I have to say about that.”

The AP’s description of specific operational details and the administration’s denial should be kept distinct. The available accounts establish what reporters said the messages contained and what officials claimed; they do not provide a definitive adjudication of the classification status of each message.
Why Signal’s use raised security concerns
Signal is a publicly available encrypted messaging app, but the AP reported that it is not approved for carrying classified information. The AP also reported, citing an unnamed official, that the Defense Department had cautioned personnel about Signal’s vulnerability the day before the strikes. That reported warning is relevant context; it does not establish that a particular vulnerability caused this incident or explain how Goldberg came to be added.

- A fast-paced game of deception and betrayal
- Beautiful wooden components
- Solid game boards with foil inlay
- Hidden roles and secret envelopes for five to ten players
The immediate security concern was the exposure of operational details in a group conversation that included an unintended journalist. The distinction matters: encryption describes protection for messages in transit and at rest, but it does not prevent a user from adding the wrong person to a group or ensure that a consumer app is authorized for sensitive government communications.
What the memes joked about
Roundups published by the Daily Dot and PinkNews on March 25 documented a wave of jokes following the leak. The central comic premise was the mismatch between a high-stakes military discussion and the familiar, error-prone habits of group messaging.

- The accidental audience: Memes imagined Goldberg reading national-security messages after being mistakenly added, or portrayed him as an obvious outsider whom the group somehow failed to notice.
- War plans as routine texts: Posts recast operational updates as marketing messages or joked about texting “STOP” to opt out of war-plan alerts.
- Officials’ texting habits: One recurring joke was that Hegseth was texting reporters, turning the leak into a gag about who was on the receiving end of official messages.
These are examples captured by early coverage, not a complete archive or evidence that every meme circulated widely. The humor focused on the accidental inclusion and the incongruity of discussing military action in a group chat; it did not make the operation itself consequence-free.

Donald Trump: the administration behind the episode
Trump’s connection is the administration whose senior officials were discussing the operation. The cited meme coverage documents jokes about the chat leak and its participants, but does not establish that Trump himself was a member of this Signal group or that he was a central subject of the documented memes.

Elon Musk: depicted as left out
PinkNews documented a meme showing Musk looking left out, captioned “You guys have a group chat?” That makes him a subject of at least one reported joke, not a participant in the Yemen strike chat. The meme works by playing on his public association with the Trump-era political conversation; it should not be mistaken for evidence about access to this particular group.
Vladimir Putin: an indirect and uncertain connection
The Post reported that a chat participant identified as Steve Witkoff appeared to have been added on the same day he was in Russia meeting Putin. The paper explicitly noted uncertainty about whether Witkoff had his phone with him. Separately, the Post reported a quip from European Parliament member Nathalie Loiseau: “Putin is now unemployed: No point in spying anymore, the leaks come from the [Americans] themselves.” This was a reaction to the leak, not evidence that Putin participated in or received the chat.
What the episode shows—and what it does not
Signalgate brought together three distinct stories: a major U.S. military operation, a dispute over the handling and classification of operational information, and a viral meme response to an avoidable group-chat mistake. The memes documented the public’s ridicule of the communications failure. They do not resolve the classification dispute, establish who had access beyond the reported participants, or prove the reach of every joke.
