Written and directed by Faraz Arif Ansari, it tells that romance without spoken dialogue, using glances, gestures and the rhythms of an everyday commute.
What is Sisak about?
The film follows two men who repeatedly share Mumbai local-train journeys. A connection develops between them, but the story is conveyed through nonverbal communication rather than conversation. The British Film Institute describes the romance as unfolding in the quiet of a train journey, through body language and what it calls “games of the mind.” BFI Player’s film listing and the Fargo-Moorhead LGBT Film Festival listing both place the encounters on the men’s end-of-day journeys.

The setting matters to the film’s form: a shared public space becomes the setting for a romance expressed quietly, through what the men notice and communicate to one another. That reading follows from the film’s premise; it should not be mistaken for a symbolic explanation attributed to the director.
Why is the film silent?
Silence is a storytelling choice, not an absence of subject matter. In a 2020 interview, Ansari said he chose silence because he had so much to express about queer lives and rights. Looking back on making the film before Section 377 was abolished, he described the form as a way to convey those thoughts. Read the interview with Ansari.

Ansari has also framed the film as more than a love story. In an interview response reproduced by GOSH! Film Festival, he described it as a political statement about the Indian Constitution and a social statement about the rejection of queer people by their families. That is the filmmaker’s stated perspective, rather than a neutral plot summary. GOSH! Film Festival’s Sisak page reproduces his response.
Who made Sisak?
Ansari wrote and directed the film. The BFI lists Jitin Gulati and Dhruv Singhal in the cast; the FilmOut festival listing also credits both actors and names Ansari and Aparna Sud as producers. Credits vary among listings, including the music credit, so it is better not to combine those differing entries into a single definitive credit list without consulting the film’s end titles or an authoritative production source. The GOSH! and FilmOut pages use the name Faraz Arif Ansari, while the BFI uses Faraz Ansari. FilmOut festival listing.
