Which Shrek movie made the most money?
Shrek 2 leads this ranking, ahead of Shrek the Third by about $126.5 million in reported worldwide gross. NBCUniversal also identifies Shrek 2 as the highest-grossing of the four domestically, reporting $441.5 million in U.S. domestic box office. That domestic figure measures a different territory and should not be compared directly with the worldwide totals above.

Why do box-office totals differ between sources?
Box-office databases can use different accounting and release scopes. For example, Box Office Mojo’s Shrek franchise page labels its ranking measure “Lifetime Gross” and reports different figures for the original Shrek and Shrek 2 than The Numbers’ worldwide column. For a consistent comparison, the table above uses one source and one geography throughout.
NBCUniversal’s anniversary article gives domestic figures, which are not interchangeable with worldwide gross. It reports that the four main films together generated more than $1.27 billion domestically. It also describes nearly $4 billion worldwide for the broader franchise, including the two Puss in Boots spin-offs; that is not the total for the four Shrek films alone.
Rank #2
Are the Puss in Boots films included?
No. This ranking covers only the four theatrical films titled Shrek, Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After. NBCUniversal describes the wider franchise as those four films plus two Puss in Boots spin-offs, so including the spin-offs would be a different ranking.

For a sense of the character’s early reception, NBCUniversal’s anniversary article recalls Roger Ebert’s line as Shrek premiered in U.S. theaters on May 18, 2001: “One movie cannot contain him.”
