Sarah Stephanie Landry says she once helped introduce online audiences to spiritual leader Nithyananda and organize a social-media team at his ashram. In a 2020 Gizmodo feature, she later accused people at the ashram of abusing children and said she herself experienced sexual exploitation and other abuse. Nithyananda’s supporters disputed her account. The feature documents the competing claims; it does not establish them as adjudicated findings.
How Landry helped introduce Nithyananda online
Landry told Gizmodo writer Jed Oelbaum that she first encountered Nithyananda in 2009. She began making YouTube videos to introduce potential followers to him: “I started my YouTube channel as a way to introduce seekers to him.”
She later became a public face and social-media organizer for the movement, according to Oelbaum’s June 17, 2020 feature. Landry said that after returning to the ashram in 2017, she set up a team and trained residents to create channels. The idea, as the feature describes it, was to let prospective followers encounter people they could identify with.
Landry recalled that her channel had “about 50,000 subscribers” at the time of a 2015 event. That figure is her recollection as reported in 2020, not a verified platform count. The feature also described Nithyananda’s main YouTube channel as having more than 60 million total views at publication. That, too, is a 2020-era figure—not a current count. The article does not independently measure how much Landry’s work contributed to the movement’s overall online reach.

What Landry later alleged
In 2019, Landry went public with allegations that children at an ashram school were abused. She said children were pressured to fake demonstrations of supposed spiritual powers. She later alleged that she had experienced sexual exploitation and other abuse herself.
These are serious claims attributed to Landry in the feature, not findings established by the article. The distinction matters: a reported first-hand allegation is not the same as an independently corroborated finding, and Oelbaum’s account does not resolve the underlying dispute.

How Nithyananda’s supporters responded
Gizmodo also interviewed former members and recorded responses from supporters who disputed Landry’s claims. They called her dishonest and offered different explanations for her departure and motives. Those statements are counterclaims from people interviewed by the feature; they do not, by themselves, disprove her allegations.
The dispute played out online through response videos, posts, petitions, blogs, and conspiracy claims about Landry’s motives. The feature presents a conflict in which both sides urged audiences to trust their version of events, rather than a conclusive public record that settles the allegations.

What the 2020 feature can—and cannot—answer
The reporting shows how someone who had promoted Nithyananda online later became one of his sharpest critics, and how supporters challenged her credibility. It also preserves one follower’s account of the movement’s online reach: Sri Nithya Dridhananda told Gizmodo, “If YouTube didn’t exist, then I never would have come across Swamiji.”
Oelbaum wrote that Gizmodo sought comment from Nithyananda or an organizational representative several times but received no response. The feature was published on June 17, 2020. It does not establish later developments in legal proceedings, the organization’s present status, subsequent statements from the people involved, or current channel figures. Its account is therefore best read as reporting on the allegations and the online fight over them at that time—not as a ruling on who was telling the truth.
