Anna Sawai said she felt sad accepting her 2025 Screen Actors Guild Award because the celebration seemed like a final moment with the Shōgun cast as a team. Her tears were not, by her account, a reaction of distress at winning: she was thinking about the long journey they had shared and the cast moving on without her.
What happened at the 2025 SAG Awards?
At the 31st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on February 23, 2025, Sawai won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for Shōgun. She appeared tearful as she accepted the award. SAG-AFTRA’s awards coverage records the ceremony and category.

Shōgun entered the night with five nominations—the most of any series—and won four awards, according to SAG-AFTRA’s recap. Alongside Sawai’s individual win, Hiroyuki Sanada won the male actor award, the cast won the drama ensemble award, and the production received the stunt ensemble award.
Why did Anna Sawai say she was crying?
In a later interview with Access Hollywood’s Zuri Hall at the 2025 TIME Women of the Year gala, Sawai described the feeling as sadness about the team’s shared experience coming to a close. She said: “I just felt like it was such a long journey and to have celebrated it that way with them and it would be the last time to be there as a team, I felt sad and to know that they were going to move on as a team without me.”

That first-person explanation is the clearest account of the moment: Sawai was emotional about the end of a long shared journey and the possibility that the cast would celebrate together for the last time. She did not say that Shōgun itself was ending.

TIME’s February 24, 2025 recap described Sawai as appearing to cry while accepting the award and connected the moment to the likelihood that the cast’s awards-season celebrations together were ending. That was contemporaneous reporting; Sawai’s later interview supplied her own explanation.
