Shawn Michaels’s most memorable guest-referee appearances are the ones in which officiating became part of the story: from his first turn in the stripes at SummerSlam 1997 to the controversial finish of Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton in 2013. This editorial top five weighs match stakes, Michaels’s role in the action, and how much his decisions shaped the outcome; it is not an official WWE ranking.
1. Bret Hart vs. The Undertaker — SummerSlam 1997
WWE identifies this as Michaels’s first time wearing the referee stripes. Hart used a chair while Michaels was down and facing away. When Michaels noticed the chair and confronted Hart, he became part of the action and ultimately laid out The Undertaker. The match makes the list for establishing a pattern that would define several later appearances: Michaels was not merely there to count the fall.

2. The Rock vs. Triple H — SmackDown premiere, August 26, 1999
Michaels was acting commissioner as well as special guest referee for this WWE Championship match. As The Rock prepared to deliver the People’s Elbow, Michaels hit him with Sweet Chin Music, allowing Triple H to win and retain the title. WWE’s retrospectives highlight this as a striking example of an authority figure using the referee role to turn a high-profile match.
3. Triple H vs. The Rock — Judgment Day 2000
This 60-minute WWE Iron Man Match is the shortlist’s most sustained test of officiating. Michaels counted 11 falls: six for Triple H and five for The Rock, according to WWE’s account. Unlike the sudden intervention in the 1999 SmackDown match, the repeated counts made his work central throughout a long contest.

4. The Undertaker vs. Triple H — WrestleMania XXVIII Hell in a Cell
Michaels wanted to call the rematch fairly, but friendship and the intensity of the match complicated that aim. After The Undertaker accidentally caught him in Hell’s Gate, Michaels reacted with Sweet Chin Music. The Undertaker still won, making this a memorable case where Michaels’s emotional response affected the action without changing the result.
5. Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton — Hell in a Cell 2013
Michaels refereed the WWE Championship Hell in a Cell match and, according to WWE, had called it fairly up to the turning point. Bryan accidentally collided with Michaels, then Triple H entered the Cell. Michaels got back up and superkicked Bryan, setting up Orton’s pinfall and title win. Of these five, this is the clearest example of a decisive and controversial intervention directly leading to the finish.

Other guest-referee appearances
WWE’s retrospective documents more than these five appearances, including a six-man tag match on Raw (May 1, 1999); Triple H vs. The Undertaker vs. Chyna (Raw, August 9, 1999); Triple H vs. Mankind (Raw, August 16, 1999, with Shane McMahon sharing the officiating); Triple H vs. Rob Van Dam (Raw, December 2, 2002); the New Year’s Revolution 2005 Elimination Chamber; and Kane vs. Rob Conway and John Cena vs. Kenny of the Spirit Squad (both Raw, May 1, 2006). The documented roles vary, including slow counts, accidental contact, interference, and active intervention. WWE’s retrospective is a useful record of these moments, not a claim that the ranked five exhaust Michaels’s referee history.
