Whether the Sex and the City sequel lasted too long is less settled. Critics who found its stories scattered have a strong case; a more positive response to season three, and the continuing appeal of Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte, make a blanket verdict harder to defend.
When did And Just Like That end?
On August 1, 2025, showrunner Michael Patrick King announced that the series would conclude with season three. The Associated Press reported that King made the decision while writing the season’s final episode, which was then divided into two parts. He described the stopping point this way: “While I was writing the last episode of ‘And Just Like That …’ Season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop.” The Los Angeles Times reported the announcement and quoted King.
Season three began May 29, 2025, with new episodes scheduled weekly on Thursdays and a finale set for August 14, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s April 15 schedule announcement. The season was ultimately 12 episodes, with the final episode split into two. The Los Angeles Times reported that the original Sex and the City ran for six seasons, from 1998 to 2004; And Just Like That brought Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte back for stories about their lives in middle age.
Why some critics thought the sequel had run out of momentum
The case that the series outstayed its welcome rests less on its duration than on whether its stories cohered. The Washington Post called the show uneven, arguing that its first season introduced too many storylines and new characters. Its criticism extended to the treatment of Miranda’s sexuality and what it saw as a lack of cohesion later on. The paper also noted that ratings had slid since season one, but did not provide figures or a season-by-season ratings dataset; that is a critic’s qualitative observation, not proof that viewers broadly rejected the show. The Washington Post’s review lays out that critical case.

The Los Angeles Times’ discussion of the finale raised a related concern: with multiple plotlines and character arcs still in motion, the ending could feel less like a planned conclusion than a stopping point. That is an interpretation of the storytelling, not evidence about the studio’s reasons for ending the series. Its finale coverage also considers how the last episode resolves Carrie’s story.
What the revival had to offer beyond nostalgia
The return of Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte gave longtime viewers a reason to check in, but familiarity alone could not guarantee that their new stories would work. The later-life premise offered different material: the characters could face changing relationships, loss and the unsettled parts of middle age rather than simply repeat the original show’s concerns. The Los Angeles Times described nostalgia and viewers’ continued interest in seeing how the trio navigated those changes. That interest matters, but it does not establish that every storyline succeeded.

Season three also complicates the argument that the show had become irredeemably stale. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-three page presents a positive critics consensus, describing the season as improved and more comfortable with itself, while also listing reviews that call it dull, listless or badly written. The page reflects a range of opinions, not a stable measure of audience enthusiasm; its score and review count can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-three page shows that split.
Did the finale give Carrie and her friends enough closure?
The Los Angeles Times summarized Carrie’s central resolution as the recognition that a satisfying life with friends does not require a romantic partner. It is a clear endpoint for her story, though viewers may differ on whether it feels earned or sufficient after the series’ unresolved threads. The finale’s meaning is open to judgment; the fact of the ending is not.

So, had And Just Like That outstayed its welcome?
For critics who found the writing unfocused, the characterization uneven and the connection to the original’s strengths strained, the answer is yes: the revival sometimes seemed to spend more time adding stories than shaping them. But the verdict cannot fairly be universal. Season three received a more favorable critical consensus than some of the show’s earlier reception, and the premise still held interest for viewers invested in these characters. The series ended after three seasons, but that timing alone does not show that it was cancelled because of poor ratings or that audiences wanted it gone. “Outstayed its welcome” is ultimately an assessment of the storytelling—not a documented consensus about the audience.
