Shonda Rhimes resigned as treasurer and trustee of the Kennedy Center board after the board elected Donald Trump chair on February 12, 2025. The vote came after Trump announced plans to change the board and the White House listed new trustee appointments. Rhimes’s spokesman confirmed her departure to The Washington Post; no public explanation from Rhimes for her decision was reported.
What happened
The sequence matters. Trump announced on February 7, 2025, that he planned to change the Kennedy Center board. The White House then listed trustee appointments on February 11 and 12, including Trump’s appointment as a trustee. On February 12, the board voted to elect him chair. Rhimes, who was serving as the board’s treasurer, resigned after that vote.
The White House release documents trustee appointments; it does not record the chair election. That action was a separate board vote, reported by The Washington Post and other outlets. The Kennedy Center said at the time that its chair was appointed by board members under governance established by Congress in 1958, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Why did Shonda Rhimes resign?
Rhimes’s departure followed the vote, but the available reporting did not establish a public statement from her explaining why she resigned. It is accurate to report the timing; it is not established that she publicly cited Trump’s election, a particular policy, or any other specific reason.

How her departure differed from other Kennedy Center exits
Rhimes left a governance role as a trustee and treasurer. Other departures reported around the leadership changes involved artistic-adviser positions, not board seats.
- Shonda Rhimes: trustee and board treasurer; resigned from the board after the February 12 vote.
- Ben Folds: left his role as an artistic adviser to the National Symphony Orchestra.
- Renée Fleming: announced she would step down as an artistic adviser.
The Kennedy Center also removed its longtime president, Deborah F. Rutter, at the February 12 meeting. Her departure was a separate action from Rhimes’s resignation. The Washington Post reported that Rutter told staff, “I hope I’m not saying goodbye as a friend and colleague to all of you, but I am leaving now.”

Why the board changes drew attention
The Kennedy Center is a major performing-arts institution, so changes to its leadership affect more than a single board seat. The Washington Post reported roughly 2 million annual visitors and a $268 million operating budget for 2024. Those figures describe the institution, not any measured financial or attendance effect of Rhimes’s resignation.
After the vote, Trump said, “It is a Great Honor to be Chairman of The Kennedy Center, especially with this amazing Board of Trustees,” according to the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

Update: later developments at the Kennedy Center
Subsequent events changed the institution’s circumstances, but they should not be treated as consequences of Rhimes’s departure alone. The Associated Press reported in March 2026 that the board voted to close the venue for two years after the July 4 celebrations that year, amid a broader period of resignations and cancellations.
On October 2, 2026, the Associated Press reported that the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors were scheduled for December 7 at Capital One Arena while the center’s riverfront venue was closed. Its report also described litigation over adding Trump’s name to the institution and said a judge had indicated congressional approval was required for a name change. Venue plans and the legal status of the naming dispute may change.
