The line “I thought I was about to be a father” appears in Shawn Mendes’s song “Why Why Why.” Released on August 8, 2024, the track introduced his album Shawn. Mendes has spoken about choosing to write candidly, but the lyric alone does not confirm a real-life pregnancy scare or identify anyone involved.
Which song includes the fatherhood lyric?
It is “Why Why Why,” one of the first singles from Mendes’s fifth studio album, Shawn. The lyric reads: “I thought I was about to be a father.” It is a line in the song, not a separate verified account of an event.
When was “Why Why Why” released?
Mendes released “Why Why Why” alongside “Isn’t That Enough” on August 8, 2024, his birthday. The songs were introduced as music from the then-upcoming album Shawn. Rolling Stone Canada reported that “Why Why Why” came with a video directed by Anthony Wilson and Connor Brashier, and listed October 18, 2024 as the album’s planned release date at the time. These are historical release details, not a current announcement. Rolling Stone Canada’s August 9, 2024 report covers the release and video.
Did Mendes confirm a pregnancy scare?
The available reporting does not establish that the lyric describes a real pregnancy scare, and it does not identify a person involved. The Independent explicitly cautioned that it was unknown whether the songs represented true events in Mendes’s life. Us Weekly reported that Mendes had not further addressed the supposed pregnancy scare. A first-person lyric can suggest a personal perspective, but it is not independent confirmation of the circumstances behind it.

What has Mendes said about writing the song?
In a Zane Lowe interview for Apple Music 1, as quoted by Us Weekly, Mendes said he saw two choices: speak his “exact truth” or “dance around it.” He added that dancing around it felt pointless, even if the song never came out. Those comments explain his approach to writing; they do not verify what real-life event, if any, inspired this particular line.
Rolling Stone Canada reported that Mendes described the lyric’s words as having “something anthemic” about them. He also called the song a cry that felt “powerful and beautiful,” and described Shawn as “the most natural thing I’ve ever made.”
