Shawn Mendes did describe an undefined connection with Hailey Baldwin, but he did not clearly confirm that they were in a formally defined or exclusive dating relationship. In a 2018 Rolling Stone interview, as quoted by contemporaneous reports, he called their time together “more of a zone of limbo” and said he did not want to put a title on it.
What Mendes said about their connection
In remarks from the 2018 interview reproduced by The Guardian Nigeria and Jezebel on November 26, Mendes was asked about his association with Hailey. He said, “I don’t even wanna put a title on it. I think it was more of a zone of limbo.”

That answer acknowledges something emotionally ambiguous, but it stops short of confirming a conventional relationship. It does not establish that the pair were exclusive, officially dating, or together for any particular length of time.
Why the “just friends” account also matters
Later coverage by Teen Vogue noted that Mendes had previously insisted he and Hailey were “just friends.” The two accounts are not necessarily incompatible: one is a more complicated reflection on their connection, while the other rejects or avoids a relationship label. Neither establishes a precise private timeline.

Their public association included appearing together at the 2018 Met Gala. Later that year, Hailey became engaged to Justin Bieber; the available accounts place the couple’s public reunion in June and July 2018.
What Mendes said after Hailey’s engagement
Mendes said he texted Hailey “Congratulations” after her engagement and that he was genuinely happy for her and Justin. In the interview remarks reproduced by Jezebel, he also praised Hailey and reflected, “I think I’m an idiot to not, you know… But you can’t control your heart.” That reflection conveys lingering feeling or regret, but it does not clarify whether they had been in a defined relationship.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
The best-supported reading is that Mendes acknowledged an undefined romantic connection while resisting a label. Calling the story a straightforward confirmation that he “dated” Hailey overstates what his quoted words establish. The contemporaneous accounts reproduce remarks attributed to the Rolling Stone interview; the original interview text was not directly available for verification here.
