The show’s reported episodes do not explain the apparent contradiction, so the actor’s allergy and the character’s story should be kept separate.
Is Jim Parsons allergic to cats?
According to a 2021 Showbiz Cheat Sheet report about Parsons’s appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the actor said he was allergic and described his eyes getting puffy. The report also says producers knew about the allergy and gave him Claritin for an episode involving cats. This is a secondary account of the interview, not an independently verified transcript.
Does Sheldon Cooper have a cat allergy in the show?
The series’ reported portrayals conflict. In season 1’s “The Fuzzy Boots Corollary,” Sheldon objects when Leonard considers getting a cat; entertainment reports describe his objection as invoking asthma or an allergy. That scene does not establish that Sheldon definitively has the same allergy as Parsons.
In season 4’s “The Zazzy Substitution,” Sheldon adopts 25 cats after his breakup with Amy. He later gives them up after his mother, Mary, intervenes. A 2024 Slashfilm account describes this as a continuity inconsistency, rather than pointing to an explanation in the series.

Why does Sheldon get 25 cats if he objected to one?
The reported episodes leave the mismatch unexplained: the earlier objection is associated with asthma or allergy, while the later storyline has Sheldon adopting a large group of cats. The sources do not establish that the show intended these scenes to describe a lasting, diagnosed allergy.
Looper discusses fan theories that Sheldon may have used an allergy as an excuse to stop Leonard from getting a pet, or that an allergy could have changed over time. Those are speculative readings, not explanations confirmed by the show.

What the apparent plot hole does—and does not—mean
- About Parsons: a secondary report attributes a statement about his cat allergy and puffy eyes to him.
- About Sheldon: the two storylines portray him differently, and the reported episodes do not reconcile them.
- About a resolution: no on-screen explanation is identified in the entertainment reports. Treating the discrepancy as a continuity gap is more supportable than declaring that Sheldon definitely shares Parsons’s allergy.
