The Austin quintet brings country, Southern rock, folk and honky-tonk together across 13 tracks, with stories shaped by war, regret, memory and hard-won perspective. Its connection to Yellowstone adds a wider point of entry, but the album’s defining feature is its range of narrative voices and musical textures.
When did Norther come out?
The album was released on March 1, 2024, through Thirty Tigers/Geronimo West Records. It is the band’s fourth studio album and its first full-length studio release after Hail Mary, which came out in 2019. The five-year gap gives Norther the feel of a return, though its 13 songs reach across several musical styles rather than settling into one narrow sound.

What does Norther sound like?
The band’s release announcement describes the record as a mix of country, Southern rock, folk and honky-tonk. Those influences sit alongside the group’s four-part harmonies and lead singer Shane Smith’s deep, smoky baritone. The combination places the album in a Texas-rooted Americana lane while leaving room for rock weight, folk storytelling and country songcraft.
That blend is useful context for the album’s stories: the songs are not presented as a single narrative or concept, but their recurring attention to memory, responsibility and reflection gives the sequence a contemplative through line. The contrast between a full-band sound and intimate subject matter is part of the record’s character.

What is on the 13-track album?
AllMusic lists Norther at 51:52. The sequence moves from the opening “Book of Joe” through songs including “Fire in the Sky,” “The Grey Between” and “Field of Heather,” before closing with “Fire in the Ocean.”
| Track | Track |
|---|---|
| 1. “Book of Joe” | 8. “All the Way” |
| 2. “Fire in the Sky” | 9. “Hummingbird” |
| 3. “Adeline” | 10. “1,000 Wild Horses” |
| 4. “The Grey Between” | 11. “It’s Been a While” |
| 5. “Navajo Norther” | 12. “Everything and More” |
| 6. “Field of Heather” | 13. “Fire in the Ocean” |
| 7. “Wheels” |
The band’s release notes offer a few entry points into the lyrics. “Field of Heather” looks back through the perspective of a World War II veteran carrying questions and remorse. “The Greys Between” is described as a song about regret and the wisdom that can come from honest reflection. “Hummingbird,” released as a single in 2022, is one of the album’s earlier introductions.

“Fire in the Sky” and the weight of responsibility
Smith described “Fire in the Sky” as painting “a picture with the darkest colors of war.” In the band’s account, the song follows two brothers trying to return from war and focuses on the older brother’s sense of responsibility for the younger. That premise makes the track one of the album’s most explicitly narrative songs.
How is Norther connected to Yellowstone?
“Fire in the Ocean” links the record to the band’s television exposure: Shane Smith & The Saints performed the song in the opening episode of Yellowstone Season 5, which aired in November 2022. The band also said its music appeared multiple times in Season 4. Those placements helped introduce the group’s sound to viewers beyond its Texas roots, while Norther itself ranges well beyond a single soundtrack moment.

What does the album title mean?
A search-result excerpt from a Holler interview quotes Smith describing the title as “a recognition of where we are at in this moment.” Without the full interview context, that line should be read as a brief indication rather than a complete explanation of the title. The album’s own subjects—war, remorse, regret and reflection—nevertheless make a present-tense reckoning a fitting frame for its songs.
