Alex Turner, Jarvis Cocker, Richard Hawley and Michael Vaughan are four notable Sheffield Wednesday supporters. They span music and sport, but the available sources do not establish an objective ranking of the club’s most famous fans, so this is a selection rather than a definitive top four.
Why these four Sheffield Wednesday supporters stand out
The four names are supported by a mix of recent reporting, specific anecdotes and fan lists. That evidence helps identify notable Wednesdayites, but it is not a like-for-like measure of celebrity or a ranking of their fame.
| Supporter | Known for | What the sources say about their Wednesday connection |
|---|---|---|
| Alex Turner | Arctic Monkeys frontman | FourFourTwo names him as a famous supporter and reports that he has watched Wednesday in disguise to avoid recognition; C.F. Classics also lists him as a confirmed famous follower. |
| Jarvis Cocker | Pulp frontman | The Observer reported in February 2026 that Cocker planned to visit the club shop with Richard Hawley and Pulp drummer Nick Banks. C.F. Classics points to a 2016 Guardian interview as confirmation of his allegiance. |
| Richard Hawley | Singer-songwriter | The Observer describes him as a supporter who first went to Hillsborough as a child with his father and grandfather, and reports his effort to support the club during a busy shop visit. |
| Michael Vaughan | Former England cricket captain | C.F. Classics says Vaughan moved to Sheffield at an early age and has followed the Owls since. Access Wednesday named him among high-profile Wednesdayites in 2016. |
Alex Turner: Arctic Monkeys and the Owls
Turner is the most direct link between the celebrity-fan question and one of Sheffield’s best-known bands. FourFourTwo identifies him as a Wednesday supporter and recounts that he has watched the team in disguise to avoid being recognised. That disguise detail is a reported anecdote, not a claim independently confirmed by the other sources cited here. C.F. Classics also includes Turner on its list of famous Wednesday followers.
Jarvis Cocker: a Pulp connection to Wednesday
Cocker’s connection appears alongside those of other Sheffield musicians in recent club-related reporting. The Observer reported on 21 February 2026 that he had planned to join Hawley and Pulp drummer Nick Banks at the Wednesday club shop. C.F. Classics cites a 2016 Guardian interview as confirmation of Cocker’s allegiance; that interview is not independently available among the sources cited here.

Richard Hawley: a family route to Hillsborough
The Observer says Hawley first went to Hillsborough as a child with his father and grandfather. Its February 2026 report also describes him trying to support the club during a busy shop visit. The paper quoted him saying of the supporters’ response, “I choke up thinking about it.” C.F. Classics describes him as a lifelong fan and regular at matches.
Michael Vaughan: the cricket captain who follows the Owls
C.F. Classics says Vaughan moved to Sheffield at an early age and has followed Wednesday since. The 2016 supporter publication Access Wednesday also named him among high-profile Wednesdayites. Those sources establish a longstanding association, but they do not verify his current match attendance.

What recent reporting adds
The Observer’s 21 February 2026 story places Hawley, Cocker, Banks and members of Arctic Monkeys in the club’s orbit during a club-shop visit. It describes an exceptional moment after Sheffield Wednesday entered administration: fans spent more than £200,000 in the club shop over the weekend covered by that report. That figure belongs to that specific historical weekend; it is not an annual total or a current sales measure.
Banks also described the emotional rhythm of supporting Wednesday as “grim stoicism,” with “unending misery, with the occasional spark of ecstasy.” The phrases are the Observer’s reported quotations attributed to him, and capture a familiar supporter’s perspective rather than a claim about the club’s results.

Other famous names associated with Sheffield Wednesday
The four featured here are not the only well-known people associated with the Owls. C.F. Classics’ wider list includes David Blunkett, Roy Hattersley, Jermaine Jackson, Michael Palin and Jon McClure. FourFourTwo also mentions members of the Human League and Heaven 17 among Wednesday’s music supporters. These lists are useful for finding further names, but they do not create a comparable measure of fame or confirm the same kind of evidence for every person. C.F. Classics notes that Michael Palin also supports Sheffield United, so his football allegiance is not exclusive.
