Shardlake is both C. J. Sansom’s Tudor historical-mystery novel series and a 2024 screen adaptation of its first book, Dissolution. Set in 1536, the adaptation follows lawyer Matthew Shardlake as he investigates a suspicious death at a monastery during the political and religious upheaval of the dissolution of the monasteries.
What is Shardlake about?
In the screen adaptation, Thomas Cromwell sends lawyer Matthew Shardlake to the remote monastery of Scarnsea to investigate the suspicious death of a commissioner. The commissioner had been gathering evidence to close the monastery. As further deaths emerge, the inquiry becomes entangled with the upheaval surrounding the dissolution of the monasteries.
Disney places the story in 1536 and describes Shardlake as living with scoliosis. Its description also notes the abuse he faces in Tudor society because of his appearance. C. J. Sansom said he wanted to write about the dissolution because its dramatic potential had not, in his view, been fully explored amid the complexities of theology and politics. Disney’s series description and Sansom’s publisher interview provide those details.
Which book is the adaptation based on?
The adaptation is based on Dissolution, the first Matthew Shardlake novel by C. J. Sansom. Disney describes its screen version as a four-part drama, while Penguin Random House identifies Dissolution as the first novel. The series is therefore a useful choice for viewers who want a Tudor mystery on screen, and the novel is the starting point for readers who would rather encounter the story in print.

How does the story address disability?
The fictional Shardlake’s scoliosis and the actor Arthur Hughes’s disability are distinct facts. Disney’s series description says Shardlake lives with scoliosis; the Associated Press reports that Hughes was born with radial dysplasia.
In an interview with the AP, Hughes reflected on the significance of disabled actors playing leading characters: “We don’t see a lot of leading disabled characters,” he said, adding that he hoped disabled audiences might recognise parallels with their own world and see that a disabled actor can play a leading part. The AP interview attributes those remarks to Hughes.
