Fat Cat made his television debut in 1972, and Perth marked the character’s 50th anniversary in October 2021. The milestone celebrated Fat Cat’s long association with Perth’s Channel 7, while the history of the children’s program Fat Cat and Friends also includes an earlier Channel 10 broadcast in Adelaide.
When did Fat Cat first appear on TV?
Fat Cat’s television debut was in 1972. PerthNow and The West Australian place the character’s arrival on Perth television that year; the latter says he appeared on TVW Channel 7’s live children’s programming at the start of 1972. The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) also dates Fat Cat and Friends to 1972, describing its premiere as a Channel 10 program in Adelaide. Those accounts refer to connected but distinct contexts: Fat Cat’s Perth character history and the Adelaide-origin program.
The West Australian reported that, as colour television took off in 1971, TVW Channel Seven general manager Sir James Cruthers called for a new, colourful character. Greg Byrne brought in a drawing by his wife, Judy, who the newspaper says received $100 for it. That is the newspaper’s account of the character’s creation.
What was Fat Cat’s connection to Seven?
Fat Cat became closely associated with Perth’s Channel 7, where he appeared in children’s television. The program Fat Cat and Friends, however, has a broader broadcast history. NFSA describes it as a popular half-hour children’s show of the 1970s and 1980s, first shown on Network Ten and moving to Seven from 1987. Another NFSA entry lists the series as running from 1972 to 1992. These records do not establish one uninterrupted broadcaster timeline for the entire series.

Why was Fat Cat and Friends cancelled?
The cancellation followed a dispute over the program’s P classification in 1991. According to NFSA’s archival account, an Australian Broadcasting Tribunal committee withheld certification and recommended replacing the show with a more educational program. The committee’s assessment was that Fat Cat was “not clearly defined and might confuse the young.” Seven cancelled the show rather than adopting the recommendation.

NFSA records a Fat Cat doll dated 1986 in its collection. It is evidence of the character’s physical memorabilia, not confirmation that the doll is currently for sale. The archival record is one way to trace Fat Cat beyond his television appearances.
