Adapted from Mick Herron’s novel Spook Street, it uses a bombing and the secrets it exposes to turn the series’ familiar machinery of espionage toward questions of legacy, failure and trust. It is a strong choice for viewers drawn to character-driven spy stories, not just operational twists.
What is Season 4 of Slow Horses about?
Apple’s spoiler-light setup centers on a bombing that detonates personal secrets. River Cartwright’s concern for his grandfather, David Cartwright—a former senior MI5 official—brings family history into a story already shaped by institutional loyalties and suspicion. The season’s tension comes from those worlds colliding: private history is not safely separate from the work of intelligence.

The Atlantic’s review reads David’s prominence through questions of legacy and potential betrayal. It also sees the series’ recurring interest in failure as a way to understand what the characters’ mistakes and exile reveal. Those are critical interpretations rather than details in Apple’s official synopsis, but they capture why this season’s stakes feel personal as well as political.
Why the story’s personal stakes matter
The premise gives the espionage plot an inward direction. A threat around River’s grandfather makes the past consequential in the present, while the bombing creates pressure for secrets to emerge. Instead of treating intelligence work as a self-contained puzzle, the season connects it to memory, family ties and the consequences of earlier choices.

#1 Best Overall
That focus suits Slow Horses: the characters’ compromised positions and failures are part of the drama, not obstacles to a picture of flawless spycraft. Season 4’s central appeal is the friction between the institution’s need for control and the human histories it cannot keep contained.
How Season 4 fits the book series
The season adapts Spook Street, Mick Herron’s fourth novel in the Slough House series. Apple identifies it as part of Herron’s CWA Gold Dagger Award-winning spy series. The adaptation has six episodes, giving the novel’s story a television-season format rather than a feature-length treatment.
Readers of the book can approach the show as another version of the story, while newcomers can watch without needing the novel as a prerequisite. The available season information establishes the source novel and broad setup; it does not support a scene-by-scene account of changes between page and screen.
