The shutdown followed criticism that the account’s pink styling and pop-culture references relied on stereotypes about what women sports fans like. Sky said it had listened and “didn’t get it right”; it did not publish a detailed postmortem or Halo-specific performance figures.
What was Sky Sports Halo?
Sky Group announced Halo on 13 November 2025 as a new Sky Sports TikTok channel intended to “engage and entertain female sports fans.” Sky described it as a “little sister” account alongside its existing channels, not as a replacement for its wider sports coverage. Its stated plan was to bring together material from across sport, amplify female voices, and offer a place to connect around sport and culture.
The proposed mix included behind-the-scenes content, sport fashion and lifestyle, pop-culture moments, match clips, and occasional live sport. Sky also said it planned to livestream England Netball versus New Zealand in the Vitality Netball International Series on Sunday 16 November at 3pm from London’s Copper Box Arena. The announcement established that plan, but the available reporting does not confirm whether the livestream went ahead after Sky stopped activity on the account.
Why did Sky Sports shut down Halo?
Sky’s public explanation was that the account had missed the mark. In a statement on X reproduced by The Guardian, Sky said: “Our intention for Halo was to create a space alongside our existing channel for new, young, female fans. We’ve listened. We didn’t get it right. As a result we’re stopping all activity on this account. We’re learning and remain as committed as ever to creating spaces where fans feel included and inspired.”

That statement acknowledged criticism and announced the shutdown, but did not explain the internal reasoning behind the launch or the decision to stop. The reviewed reports do not disclose Sky’s internal research, approval process, or analytics, so claims about what decision-makers knew or what Halo’s performance showed would be speculation.
What drew criticism?
Contemporaneous coverage described Halo posts with pink graphics and references to matcha, “hot girl walks,” and Barbie alongside sports clips. One post paired a clip involving Manchester City players Erling Haaland and Rayan Cherki with the caption “How the matcha + hot girl walk combo hits.” The Guardian reported that five of the account’s first eleven videos featured male sports stars.

Critics objected to the combination of gender-targeted branding, the “little sister” framing, and references they felt reduced women’s interests to a narrow set of lifestyle tropes. ABC quoted sports broadcaster and women’s cricket podcaster Georgie Heath describing the account as “very strange” and saying it made women’s sport resemble a gossip meme page. Sports journalism graduate Kristen Gott said she enjoyed Barbie, makeup, and matcha but watched sport “for the sport.” These were individual reactions, not evidence of a consensus among women fans.
Heath’s point was not that women cannot enjoy those cultural references. She told ABC: “I love makeup and Barbie and matcha and all that stuff, but I watch sport for the same reason as men do — for the sport.” The criticism was that a brand aimed at women appeared to assume those references were enough to define the audience.

Did Halo mean Sky was moving women’s sport off its other channels?
No such move was announced. Sky’s launch release called Halo a “little sister” account, and its shutdown statement described it as a space alongside existing channels. Marketing Week’s analysis made the distinction that Halo was presented as an additional channel, not a plan to move all coverage of women’s sport away from Sky’s other platforms. The criticism of a separate, gender-targeted account can be discussed without claiming Sky announced a broader transfer of coverage.
What might better coverage look like?
Commentators and interviewees offered different ideas; these are their recommendations, not policies Sky announced. In Marketing Week, Molly Innes argued that Halo appeared to be an attempt to reach young women who might not already follow sport, but that its execution and rapid closure were mistakes. She suggested audience research or collaboration with existing women’s sports platforms as possible alternatives.

Kate Dale, director of marketing at This Girl Can and Sport England, wrote in a Guardian letter that “sports marketing still treats women and girls as a single homogeneous group.” Her argument was that marketing that fails to represent varied audiences risks alienating them; it was commentary, not a study of Halo.
ABC’s interviewees also pointed toward substance and consistency. Heath advocated behind-the-scenes conversations with players, coaches, umpires, and officials, alongside profiles that help newcomers enter a sport. Gott called for more consistent coverage and explainers on rules and terminology. Together, their suggestions emphasize editorial depth and a range of fan interests rather than relying on a single style of gendered branding.

What is known about Halo’s audience and performance?
No Halo-specific reach, audience, engagement, or performance figures appear in the reviewed reporting. Sky’s launch announcement said Sky Sports had recently surpassed 2 billion TikTok views and 167 million engagements, but it did not specify the measurement window. Those are Sky-wide figures stated by the company, not Halo results, and they should not be used to infer how the account performed.
The timeline is brief: Sky announced Halo on 13 November 2025 and said on 15 November that it was stopping all activity. The Guardian described the shutdown as three days after the Thursday launch. The available material establishes the public criticism and Sky’s response, but not a fuller internal account of why Halo began or ended.
