Singer Loomis faltered during the national anthem at a live third-party presidential debate on October 23, 2024, then asked if she could start over. After being told the broadcast was live, she continued and finished the song. In the days that followed, she apologized and said she had arrived late and lacked a clear cue.
What happened during the anthem
Loomis performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a Free & Equal Elections Foundation debate featuring third-party presidential candidates. The Independent reported on October 28, 2024, that the performance was carried live on C-SPAN, radio and online.
During a high-note passage, Loomis’s voice cracked and she stopped. The Independent reported that she said, “I f***ed it up, I f***ed it up. Can I go back, please?” A voice off camera told her the broadcast was live. Loomis resumed and completed the anthem.
How Loomis explained the restart request
In an apology caption reproduced by The Independent, Loomis said she was “a little late” and “didn’t have a clear cue,” which left her flustered when the event went live. She apologized to the organizers and viewers, acknowledged that it was not her best performance and said she took responsibility. She also asked people not to let the incident define the artist she is trying to become.
In a later interview reported by TMZ on October 25, 2024, and updated October 26, Loomis attributed the request partly to nerves and confusion over whether the event was live. She said a production exchange had led her to think she needed to start again. That is Loomis’s account; the reporting does not independently verify what happened in the production exchange.

Online reaction and the Fergie comparison
The Independent reported that the clip circulated on social media and that some viewers compared Loomis’s performance with Fergie’s rendition of the anthem at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. That comparison reflects online reaction, not an objective ranking of the performances. The cited coverage does not establish a reliable view count or quantify the clip’s reach.
