Silent Witness Series 27 Finale Review: Not Quite a Season Finale

“King’s Cross” delivers a competent, familiar serial-killer investigation, but Nikki and Jack’s relationship gives the Silent Witness Series 27 finale its most lasting weight.

Spoiler warning: This review discusses the case and Nikki and Jack’s relationship in “King’s Cross – Parts 1 & 2.”

“King’s Cross” gives Silent Witness a competent two-part serial-killer investigation, but its most consequential movement is personal: Nikki and Jack take a significant step in their relationship. That makes the episodes more memorable as a character turning point than as a season-ending case. Calling it “not quite a season finale” is a critical judgment, not a claim that the story fails to conclude.

What happens in “King’s Cross”

Eight bodies are discovered beneath King’s Cross railway station, where they have lain since 2009. The Lyell team works to identify the victims and connect them to old missing-person cases as police pursue the serial murderer. Rotten Tomatoes lists “King’s Cross: Part 2” as Series 27, Episode 10, aired February 13, 2024; its episode summary also centers Nikki’s effort to identify the remaining bodies and the investigation of historic disappearances. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing credits Toby Frow as director and Ed Whitmore as screenwriter.

Does the investigation make a satisfying finale?

The two-part format gives the case room to develop through identification work, clues and late turns. But extra room does not automatically make a story feel climactic. Brittany Frederick’s CBR review, published August 21, 2024, calls the result “a serviceable serial killer story” and argues that it follows another strong serial-killer story earlier in the season. That is a critical comparison, not a measure of how viewers generally responded.

The case is therefore watchable without feeling especially fresh. Its central work—establishing who the victims are and tracing the pattern behind their deaths—fits the series’ forensic-investigation framework, while the reported twists add momentum. Yet the available account of the finale offers little reason to regard the criminal resolution as a major departure for the show. Frederick’s verdict captures the mismatch: the episodes are “a fine episode,” but seem to want to be more than that.

Why Nikki and Jack matter more here

The strongest season-ending weight comes from Nikki and Jack’s relationship taking a major step. What to Watch’s February 12, 2024 recap likewise foregrounds that development and presents Episode 10 as the series conclusion. It gives the pair’s personal story a different kind of consequence from the case: the investigation may be familiar, but their change gives the ending something that carries beyond the immediate crime.

That distinction helps explain the “not quite” in the review’s framing. The relationship beat can make the finale feel meaningful without resolving every strand of the season or transforming the murder investigation into a wholly distinctive climax. The supplied episode summaries establish the importance of the relationship development, but not the exact final scene or line; this review does not infer those details.

Verdict: a solid case ending, a more significant character turn

“King’s Cross” is a reasonably engaging serial-killer story whose body-identification mystery and twists provide the procedural spine. Its clearest claim to finale status, though, is the movement between Nikki and Jack. Viewers looking for a sharply novel case may find the crime plot familiar; those invested in the central characters have a more consequential reason to remember these episodes. Frederick’s “not quite a season finale” assessment is persuasive as a judgment about emphasis, not a verdict that the episodes do not conclude Series 27.
