Showtime sets up a studio succession fight with the ingredients of a Bollywood expose, but Nandini Ramnath’s review of its first four episodes finds the satire safer and less convincing than its premise promises.
What is Showtime about?
When Victory Studio founder Victor Khanna dies, he leaves control of the production house not to his son and expected heir, Raghu, but to Mahika, a relatively inexperienced film journalist. The decision sets up a contest between an entitled insider and an outsider learning the business, with actors and a financier caught up in the maneuvering.
Raghu tries to recruit star Armaan, whose wife, Mandira, has put her acting career on hold. Raghu’s girlfriend Yasmin and financier Saajan also figure in the studio’s shifting alliances. The premise gives the drama a clear route into questions of inheritance, influence and power.
What did the review cover?
Nandini Ramnath’s Scroll.in review, published March 8, 2024, assessed only the first four episodes available at the time. It is a review of that opening portion, not a verdict on the later complete run or a guide to the series’ current streaming availability.

The series was created and co-written by Sumit Roy, Lara Chandni and Mithun Gangopadhyay, directed by Mihir Desai, and produced by Dharmatic Entertainment for Disney+ Hotstar, as identified in the review.
Where does the series work?
Ramnath finds the succession premise promising and points to two performances that give the drama some force. Emraan Hashmi makes Raghu aggressive and self-serving without losing the character’s vulnerability; that mixture helps make him more than a simple antagonist. Rajeev Khandelwal, as Armaan, seems to relish playing a shallow star.
Those performances offer the review’s strongest reasons to keep watching: the power struggle has dramatic potential, and its actors can make the people inside it engaging.
Why does the Bollywood satire fall short?
The review’s central reservation is that the show does not yet earn its billing as a hard-hitting expose. Its observations are most effective when they stay with obvious, familiar behavior, rather than digging into the power structures the premise appears ready to confront. Celebrity cameos, in Ramnath’s view, also blunt the critique of nepotistic practices.

She is less persuaded by Mahika as Raghu’s opponent. The character feels too weak to match the scale of the conflict, and her rapid understanding of film production strains credibility. That makes the outsider-versus-insider setup less compelling: Mahika is positioned as a challenger, but the review finds her characterization insufficient to make the contest convincing.
Ramnath captured the uncertainty about the show’s larger ambition this way: “There isn’t enough hard work, at least from the available episodes, to understand just yet whether Showtime is the expose we have been waiting for or yet another half-hearted effort to lure us in by promising dirt.”

Based on the four episodes Ramnath reviewed, Showtime is a mixed prospect: its inheritance battle and some of its performances work better than its attempted industry critique. Viewers looking for a polished ensemble drama may find more to enjoy than viewers expecting an incisive investigation of Bollywood’s power games. That distinction is the review’s judgment of the series, not evidence about real people or the industry as a whole.
The 2024 review names Disney+ Hotstar as the original platform but does not establish where the series is available now, which regions can access it, or what subscriptions are required. Check a current official platform listing for those details.
