Lazarus premiered in the United States on Adult Swim’s Toonami block at midnight on April 5, 2025. The date is now a past release milestone: the series is a science-fiction thriller created and directed by Shinichirō Watanabe, following five agents trying to find a scientist and a vaccine before a fictional drug’s delayed fatal effects take hold.
When did Lazarus premiere on Adult Swim?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on February 27, 2025, that Lazarus would premiere in the United States on Saturday, April 5, at midnight on Adult Swim during Toonami. The network’s announcement described the series as Watanabe’s return to science fiction and connected him with Cowboy Bebop; that is the network’s framing, not a claim that the two shows are alike in quality or style. The same 2025 announcement said Japanese-language episodes with English subtitles would debut in the U.S. on Adult Swim and Max 30 days after the English-language premiere. That was the announced release plan at the time; it does not establish where the series is streaming now.
What is Lazarus about?
The story is set in 2052. Neuroscientist Skinner develops Hapna, a widely used painkiller initially celebrated as a miracle drug because it frees people from pain. After disappearing, Skinner returns three years later with a terrible warning: Hapna will kill its users. He gives the world 30 days to find him, and the vaccine he holds is the only way to survive.

Five agents from around the world form the Lazarus team to stop Skinner’s plan. Aniplex’s first-episode synopsis introduces Axel, a jailed man offered freedom if he finds Skinner. After Axel escapes, Doug, Chris, Leland, and Eleina pursue him. The episode is titled “GOODBYE CRUEL WORLD.” These are fictional plot details, not medical claims about a real drug. Those are the original 2025 schedule details, not confirmation of current access.
