Shōgun season 2 is an original continuation set roughly a decade after season 1, with Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis returning among an expanded cast. FX and Disney have announced its story setup, cast and Disney+ streaming home, but no premiere date has been announced in the official materials reviewed.
What is Shōgun season 2 about?
The second season continues the historically inspired story of Toranaga and Blackthorne, but it is not a direct adaptation of another section of James Clavell’s novel. FX described the new season as a “wholly original new chapter” after season 1 adapted the book, according to its April 30, 2025 announcement.

Disney’s November 13, 2025 announcement placed the story ten years after season 1. A later Disney announcement, on March 24, 2026, described it as set more than a decade later. The wording has shifted slightly between announcements; both establish a substantial time jump rather than an immediate continuation.
The novel remains useful background for the world and characters introduced in season 1, but it should not be treated as a plot guide to season 2: FX has characterized the new chapter as original.

Who is in the Shōgun season 2 cast?
FX and Disney have announced returning performers and new additions in two batches. The following characters and cast members were identified in the official announcements.

The November 2025 announcement also named Rachel Kondo, Justin Marks, Shannon Goss, Matt Lambert, Maegan Houang, Emily Yoshida, Caillin Puente and Sofie Somoroff as writers. Hiromi Kamata and Takeshi Fukunaga return as directors, alongside announced directors Anthony Byrne, Kate Herron and Justin Marks.

Has filming finished, and when will season 2 come out?
FX’s April 2025 announcement scheduled production to begin in Vancouver in January 2026. Disney then said filming was underway there in its March 24, 2026 announcement.
TV Insider’s current update reports that filming has wrapped, attributing the information to a post by showrunner Justin Marks. That is secondary reporting; the official FX and Disney materials cited here confirm production was underway in March 2026, but do not themselves confirm the wrap.

No premiere date appears in the official materials reviewed. Hulu’s guide said a date had not been announced as of August 11, 2025, and TV Insider’s current update also described the date as forthcoming. There is not enough official information to give a reliable release-day or release-window prediction.
Where can you watch Shōgun season 2?
Disney’s season-two announcements name Disney+ as the exclusive streaming home. Availability and catalog details can vary by country, so check Disney+ in your region for local access information. The announcements reviewed do not identify another season-two streaming platform.

Disney said in November 2025 that season 1 won 18 Emmy Awards, a record for the most Emmy Awards won by a series in a single season. That recognition helps explain the attention around the continuation, but it does not reveal season 2’s plot or release timing.
