The Associated Press reported on July 30 that ESPN would not bring him back, and Sharpe confirmed his departure on his Nightcap podcast. The lawsuit’s allegations were disputed; the parties announced a settlement on July 18, but its amount and terms were not made public.
What happened between Shannon Sharpe and ESPN?
April 2025: Sharpe stepped away temporarily
Sharpe appeared on ESPN’s First Take. After a civil suit was filed in Nevada, he said in April 2025 that he was temporarily stepping away and expected to return around the start of the NFL preseason. ESPN said at the time, “This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon’s decision to step away.” ESPN reported the statement on April 24, 2025.
July 2025: the suit settled, then ESPN departure was reported
On July 18, attorney Tony Buzbee announced that the parties had reached a resolution and that the lawsuit would be dismissed with prejudice. The Associated Press reported that settlement details were not released. AP’s July 18 report quoted Buzbee saying, “Both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship,” and that the lawsuit would be dismissed with prejudice.
On July 30, the AP reported, citing a person with knowledge of the decision, that Sharpe would not return to ESPN. Sharpe confirmed the news that evening on Nightcap. The Los Angeles Times reported that ESPN declined to comment on the departure. Sharpe said, “They did what they felt they needed to do. And I’m at peace with that.”

Why did Shannon Sharpe leave ESPN?
The confirmed sequence is that Sharpe stepped away while the lawsuit was pending, the parties announced a settlement, and ESPN then did not bring him back. The available reporting does not establish a public explanation from ESPN for its decision. Its April statement addressed Sharpe’s initial choice to step away, not the later decision not to return.
Sharpe continued hosting Club Shay Shay and Nightcap at the time of the AP’s departure report. The AP described his ESPN exit as a decision that he would not return; absent a public explanation from the network, it is more accurate to say the parties parted ways than to claim ESPN stated a specific reason.

What the lawsuit alleged—and what the settlement does not establish
The civil complaint alleged sexual assault and related claims. Sharpe denied the allegations, calling them false and disruptive and saying the relationship was consensual. Those are opposing accounts, not facts established by a public trial verdict.
The announced settlement and dismissal with prejudice do not, by themselves, establish an admission by Sharpe or a finding that either account was true. The reporting describes a negotiated resolution, not a verdict on the allegations.
