The headline’s “latest” framing should not be read as a verified ranking. SEGA announced this adaptation, but its announcement does not establish that Shinobi is the newest among all video-game film projects.
Who is directing and writing the Shinobi movie?
SEGA named Sam Hargrave as director and Ken Kobayashi as screenwriter. The announced producers are Marc Platt, Adam Siegel, Dmitri M. Johnson, and SEGA’s Toru Nakahara. Mike Goldberg and Timothy I. Stevenson were named executive producers. These are the roles SEGA disclosed in its project announcement; it did not include attributed verbatim quotes from the named creatives.

When will the Shinobi movie come out?
No release date is given in SEGA’s October 2024 announcement. It also does not name a production start date or say when filming will begin, so there is no confirmed timetable to report from that source.
What is the Shinobi movie about?
SEGA has not announced a plot for the film. The franchise offers context, not a confirmed movie synopsis: SEGA says Shinobi began as an arcade game in 1987 and has had more than 10 releases across platforms. The Japanese announcement describes a shinobi as a modern ninja and heroic figure who confronts great evil. That description should not be mistaken for a story outline for the adaptation.

Which game is the film based on?
The announcement identifies the project as a film based on the Shinobi game series, not as an adaptation of one specifically named installment. The currently available game, SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance, is a separate product from the film. SEGA describes it as a single-player platform battle-action game in which Joe Musashi seeks revenge after his village is burned and his companions are turned to stone.
SEGA lists SHINOBI: Art of Vengeance for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam, with an August 29, 2025 release date. SEGA lists a Nintendo Switch 2 version released September 24, 2026. Its February 2025 announcement describes a 2D action platformer with hand-drawn worlds, multiple paths, ninja weapons, ninjutsu, and platforming challenges. These are details about the game, not confirmed elements of the movie.

SEGA’s announcement placed the project in the context of successful game-to-film adaptations, citing worldwide box-office figures of $1.4 billion for Universal’s 2023 The Super Mario Bros. Movie and $290 million for Universal’s 2023 Five Nights at Freddy’s. Those are figures SEGA cited as context; they are not forecasts for Shinobi or evidence of the film’s expected performance.
