American record producer Shel Talmy, whose work with The Kinks and The Who helped define British rock in the 1960s, died at his Los Angeles home at 87. His publicist said in November 2024 that he died from complications following a stroke.
How Shel Talmy entered the British music scene
Born in Chicago, Talmy moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and worked in television and recording engineering. In 1962, he traveled to Britain intending to stay for five weeks. He went on to become a prominent producer in the country’s mid-1960s pop and rock scene.

The Kinks: a sound that hit hard
Talmy began working with The Kinks when they were still known as the Ravens, and their working relationship continued into 1967. His defining credits with the band include “You Really Got Me,” “Tired of Waiting for You” and “Sunny Afternoon.” The Guardian credits his microphone placement with helping capture the force and resonance of the group’s sound. “Waterloo Sunset” remains disputed
Talmy’s role on “Waterloo Sunset” should not be treated as settled. Ray Davies said he produced the song himself, while Talmy said he did; the accounts cited by The Guardian do not resolve the disagreement.
The Who: three landmark singles
Talmy produced The Who’s “I Can’t Explain,” “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” and “My Generation.” The Guardian reported that “I Can’t Explain” reached the UK Top 10, “Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere” reached No. 10, and “My Generation” reached No. 2.

The partnership ended amid conflict between Talmy and manager Kit Lambert, followed by a legal dispute over the production-company deal. The dispute was settled out of court, according to The Guardian.
