Rachel Jeffs Blackmore is the daughter of Warren Jeffs, the former leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS). In her memoir and public interviews, she describes growing up under strict control, being sexually abused by her father as a child, and eventually leaving the group with her five children. Her account is hers to tell; the available sources do not independently establish every detail she recounts.
Who is Rachel Jeffs Blackmore?
Jeffs Blackmore is Warren Jeffs’s daughter and the author of Breaking Free: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs. The memoir recounts her childhood in the FLDS and her departure from the group. A&E has also featured her in its documentary series Secrets of Polygamy.
“Cult” is part of the memoir’s framing and the title used here; it should not be treated as a label for every person associated with the group. The FLDS is a fundamentalist group and is distinct from the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
What does she say happened?
In her public account, including her memoir, Jeffs Blackmore says her father sexually abused her when she was a child. She has also described a tightly controlled life within the FLDS. These are serious allegations presented here as her testimony, not as independently verified detail about each incident.

In a 2024 A&E interview, she explained why she speaks publicly: “I want to give a voice to the kids. I want to give a voice to the abuse, and especially the young girls who don’t have a voice who don’t realize that they are abused.” She also said, “Most importantly, I want people to know that there’s healing after trauma.”
When did she leave the FLDS?
The published sources differ slightly on the year. A&E reports that Jeffs Blackmore left on December 31, 2014, with her five children; the Google Books catalog description of her memoir says she found the courage to leave in 2015. The sources therefore place her departure around 2015, but do not present the date consistently.

How does Warren Jeffs’s conviction relate to her account?
Warren Jeffs’s criminal case is distinct from his daughter’s account. A&E reports that on August 4, 2011, he was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for sexually assaulting two girls he called his “spiritual wives.” That sentence does not, by itself, establish the specific allegations Jeffs Blackmore has made about her own childhood.

How to understand her story
- Keep the focus on Jeffs Blackmore’s own testimony when discussing her experiences.
- Distinguish the FLDS from the mainstream Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and avoid generalizing one group’s practices to a broader religion.
- Use her memoir as a first-person source and documentaries or reported accounts for other perspectives; neither should be mistaken for the other.
