They play the earlier generation—not younger versions of Jamie and Claire, who are played in the original series by Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe.
Who plays Jamie and Claire’s parents?
| Actor | Blood of My Blood character | Connection to the original series |
|---|---|---|
| Harriet Slater | Ellen MacKenzie | Jamie Fraser’s mother |
| Jamie Roy | Brian Fraser | Jamie Fraser’s father |
| Hermione Corfield | Julia Moriston | Claire Beauchamp’s mother |
| Jeremy Irvine | Henry Beauchamp | Claire Beauchamp’s father |
The original series follows Jamie Fraser and Claire Beauchamp, played by Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. The prequel moves back a generation to tell stories about their parents rather than recasting the familiar leads. The Associated Press’ cast overview identifies the four parent-child connections.
How the two couples’ stories begin
Ellen MacKenzie and Brian Fraser
Ellen and Brian’s story begins in eighteenth-century Scotland, where their families are in conflict. Slater described the relationship as forbidden: “They don’t mix. It’s completely forbidden.” Roy has described Brian as a Highland warrior with a gentler, romantic side—a contrast between the sword-swinging image and the character’s personal life. The AP interview with the cast discusses both relationships and performances.
Julia Moriston and Henry Beauchamp
Julia and Henry first meet during World War I. Their connection begins through correspondence after Julia finds Henry’s letter at work. Henry is a soldier, and Irvine described him at the start of the story as “pretty much given up.” Their wartime story takes a sharp turn when the pair are transported to the eighteenth century. The AP account covers their meeting, while TVLine’s premiere recap describes how the two couples’ timelines converge.

How the prequel brings the families together
The couples start in different periods: Ellen and Brian in eighteenth-century Scotland, Julia and Henry in World War I. The time-travel premise brings the stories into the same historical setting. TVLine’s account of the premiere says that all four characters are in the eighteenth century by the end of the first hour. That convergence links the two family histories without changing who the actors portray: Slater and Roy are Jamie’s parents, while Corfield and Irvine are Claire’s.
How closely does the series follow the books?
Jamie’s parents appear in Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander books in scattered references; Claire’s parents are mentioned less often. The television prequel develops that franchise backstory, but it is not adapting a dedicated Blood of My Blood prequel novel. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts said that having no source material leaves “a lot more room to play in,” as reported by The Associated Press.

Are the prequel actors copying the original cast?
No: the new leads have said they aimed to avoid mimicking Heughan and Balfe while still honoring the original series. TheWrap’s interview with the prequel cast discusses that approach. The family resemblance is in the characters’ place in the story; the performances are the new actors’ interpretations.
