What happened on the 1977 show?
Thomas appeared as a guest on Donahue’s talk show in Chicago in 1977. In a 2012 caption accompanying video of the appearance, she wrote: “I met Phil on the Donahue Show in 1977 – instant chemistry!” The phrase is Thomas’s later description of their rapport, rather than an objective measure of what viewers saw. Yahoo Entertainment’s 2024 account says she was there to promote Thieves.

At the end of the segment, Donahue reportedly told her, “You are really fascinating,” and took her hand. Thomas answered, “You are wonderful.” She then recalled telling him off air that he was loving and generous and liked women, adding, “Whoever is the woman in your life is very lucky.” These lines are reported by Yahoo Entertainment; the original broadcast transcript was not independently verified.
Was 1977 the first time Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas met?
Not according to their later recollections. Thomas and Donahue recalled an earlier encounter in 1972, before the better-known Chicago appearance five years later. Their account treats the 1977 show as the occasion when their romantic connection began, rather than their first-ever meeting. The Sunday Paper’s 2020 excerpt from their book recounts Thomas’s memory of the visit; CBS also covered the couple’s recollections in 2020.

When did they marry?
Thomas and Donahue married in 1980, three years after the talk-show appearance. The book offers later reflections on marriage; it is not a recording or transcript of the 1977 segment.
