What TIME reported in 2014
In a report published October 10, 2014, TIME said images from tens of thousands of Snapchat user accounts, many of them explicit, had been leaked online. TIME also reported Snap’s position that third-party apps were responsible for a breach affecting as many as 200,000 accounts, and that Snap’s servers were never compromised. TIME described a database reportedly containing photographs collected over multiple years, including material involving teenage users. The detail underscores the seriousness of the incident, but does not establish what happened to any particular image or where it may be now.
What is—and is not—known now
The available reporting and current Snap policy and support pages do not establish that a new Snapchat leak is happening, whether images from the 2014 report remain available, or a definitive forensic explanation of that event. Avoid treating the 2014 report as evidence of a current incident or searching for or sharing intimate images.

Snap’s current rules on intimate imagery
Snap’s policy prohibits non-consensual intimate imagery, threats to create or share it, sextortion, sexual exploitation, and sexual content involving minors. These are Snap’s platform rules, not a statement of the law in every jurisdiction. The policy describes automated and human review on public surfaces and technology intended to identify certain known illegal child sexual exploitation imagery and certain non-consensual intimate imagery. Snap also says it participates in NCMEC’s Take It Down program for hashes of nude or partially nude imagery supplied by minors, and StopNCII for adults. These measures do not guarantee that material will be prevented from spreading or removed from every service. Snap’s Community Guidelines
How to report intimate images shared without permission
- Report the specific Snap or Story in the app. Press and hold the content, then tap Report Snap. Snapchat Support calls in-app reporting the fastest and best route to its safety team.
- Use Snapchat’s support page if needed. The page provides an NCII web-report route in some jurisdictions and requests details such as where and when the content appeared, the account involved, and a description. Snapchat recommends reporting in-app as well when possible.
- Do not forward or repost the imagery. Report through Snapchat’s tools rather than collecting or republishing intimate images. Snapchat says its safety team reviews reports under its platform rules and notifies the reporter of the outcome.
