Anthony L. Ricco sought court permission to withdraw as Sean Combs’ lawyer in the federal criminal case. In a declaration filed February 21, 2025, Ricco said he could no longer effectively serve Combs, but withheld the specific reasons as protected by attorney-client privilege. A third-party docket listing reports that the court granted the request on February 24, 2025.
What Anthony Ricco said in his filing
Ricco’s declaration identified the case as United States v. Combs, No. 24 Cr. 542 (AS), in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. He said he had been retained on September 22, 2024, and had served as Combs’ counsel since then.

His public explanation was: “Although I have provided Sean Combs with the high level of legal representation expected by the court, under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs, consistent with the ABA Standards for Criminal Justice.” Ricco said the reasons for his request were protected by attorney-client privilege. The declaration does not identify what prompted his decision, so the public filing does not establish a specific cause.
Did the court approve Ricco’s withdrawal?
Ricco filed a motion asking to withdraw; he did not simply leave the case without seeking permission. A third-party docket listing reports that the court granted the motion on February 24, 2025. The listing is not the court’s order itself, so consult the official docket for the order’s exact wording.

- From music mogul to controversy, Sean Combs' life is full of highs and lows, but the central mystery remains: What did Diddy do?
What Ricco said about Combs’ defense and the schedule
Ricco said he had discussed the request with lead counsel Marc Agnifilo. He represented that withdrawing would not delay jury selection, trial, or pretrial briefing, and that five other attorneys of record would continue representing Combs. The government had been notified and took no position on the motion. These were statements in Ricco’s declaration, not guarantees about what would happen later.
