During Sean Combs’s 2025 federal trial in Manhattan, singer Dawn Richard testified that she frequently witnessed Combs physically assault his former partner, Cassie Ventura. Richard described several forms of violence and recounted a 2009 incident at Combs’s home recording studio. These are accounts from her testimony, not jury findings about the incidents.
When Richard testified and what she said she witnessed
Richard testified on May 16 and May 19, 2025, during the second week of the trial; the Associated Press reported that she concluded her testimony on May 19. In AP’s account, Richard said she frequently saw Combs assault Ventura, describing punching, choking, dragging, slapping and kicking, as well as punches to Ventura’s stomach.
AP quoted Richard saying: “I saw him kick her, punch her in the stomach.” The quotation is attributed to Richard as reported by AP, rather than presented as a transcript-verified excerpt.
Richard was a singer who performed in Danity Kane and Diddy–Dirty Money, acts associated with Combs. She testified that Combs became angry, and sometimes violent, when artists tried to help Ventura write songs.

Richard’s account of the 2009 studio incident
Richard described an incident in 2009 at Combs’s home recording studio involving a skillet. She also testified that Combs threatened her and another witness afterward. Court TV’s trial coverage summarized the alleged warning as one that the witnesses “could go missing.” These details describe Richard’s account in court; they are not independent findings about what occurred.
What her testimony added to the trial
Coverage described Richard’s testimony as supporting aspects of Ventura’s testimony about physical abuse and Combs’s control over Ventura’s music career. That characterization concerns how the accounts related; it does not establish that every allegation was proved or that the jury made a finding about a particular incident.

Richard also said she heard Combs tell Ventura that he “owned her” and that success would be on his terms. Those remarks, too, are reported as Richard’s account of what she heard.

- Separate testimony from findings: Richard’s statements were evidence presented at trial, not by themselves a verdict or a judicial determination that a specific event occurred.
- Keep firsthand and reported statements distinct: Richard described what she said she witnessed and separately recounted words she said she heard.
- Do not infer a statistic: The cited reporting provides qualitative testimony, not a named study or prevalence figure.
