Screamboat turns Steamboat Willie into the monster at the center of a New York City ferry slasher. Its creators also say the film is built around Disney references and affection for the source—not simply a familiar character pasted into a generic horror story.
What is Screamboat about?
Directed by Steven LaMorte, Screamboat is a 2025 U.S.-origin horror film set aboard a late-night New York City ferry. A monstrous mouse identified as Steamboat Willie attacks the passengers. Apple TV classifies the movie as both horror and comedy, and lists its runtime as 1 hour 42 minutes and David Howard Thornton, Allison Pittel, and Amy Schumacher among its cast. Why call it a Steamboat Willie horror movie?
The character is the premise, not a cameo. Producer and co-star Amy Schumacher put the point plainly: “Without Steamboat Willie in this movie, it’s not the movie.” She described it as “this is a Steamboat Willie horror movie,” distinguishing the project from a slasher that could swap in any recognizable figure.
That source-specific approach connects the film to the cartoon’s history. According to Dave Smith, Chief Archivist Emeritus of The Walt Disney Company, Steamboat Willie opened at New York’s Colony Theater on November 18, 1928. Smith’s account says Walt Disney and his staff designed the cartoon with synchronized sound in mind. Smith’s account for the National Film Preservation Board.

What makes it a Disney fan film?
The “hardcore Disney fan film” description is best understood as a description of the filmmakers’ intent and the movie’s references, rather than a promise about every viewer’s experience. In a March 27, 2025 interview with io9, LaMorte said, “So I’m a deep-cuts Disney fanboy.” The interview describes Disney costumes, theme-park references, and lines from Disney films as part of the movie’s texture. The io9 interview with LaMorte.
That mix of horror and homage explains the film’s dual identity: its central threat comes from a specific early Disney character, while its surrounding details reward recognition of Disney references. The available descriptions establish the creators’ approach; they do not establish a consensus among audiences about how successfully the balance works.

Why does the public-domain date matter?
The timing is part of the context, but it needs a precise distinction. The Associated Press reported that the Steamboat Willie-era character entered the public domain on January 1, 2024. Disney told the AP: “We will, of course, continue to protect our rights in the more modern versions of Mickey Mouse and other works that remain subject to copyright.” The AP’s January 2, 2024 report.
That does not mean every Mickey Mouse design or Disney work is free to use. The relevant context here is the early Steamboat Willie-era character; the AP’s report also records Disney’s distinction regarding modern versions and other protected works. This is background, not a legal determination about the film or any particular depiction.
