Scott Hamilton’s third brain tumor diagnosis was reported in 2016: he had a benign pituitary tumor and was then researching possible treatments. Later accounts documented changes in the tumor, but the latest update in the sources here is from 2024. They do not confirm his medical status or treatment plan as of October 8, 2026.
What happened to Scott Hamilton?
The 2016 report described Hamilton as having a benign pituitary tumor for the third time. The Washington Post, reporting on October 24, 2016, said he was researching treatment options. The diagnosis was not reported as brain cancer, and the account did not say he had been cured.
Hamilton had previously faced testicular cancer in 1997 and brain tumors in 2004 and 2010, according to that same report. In discussing his outlook, he said he chose “to celebrate life.” His optimism was a personal response to illness, not an explanation for the tumor’s behavior or a substitute for medical care.
When was Scott Hamilton diagnosed with his third brain tumor?
The third diagnosis was reported in October 2016. The Washington Post attributed the news to an interview Hamilton gave People and said he was still researching possible treatments at the time. That report also quoted him saying, “I have a unique hobby of collecting life-threatening illness.”

What kind of brain tumor did he have?
The 2016 coverage called it a benign pituitary tumor. The pituitary is a small gland at the base of the brain, but the available accounts do not provide details such as the tumor’s size, subtype, or medical findings. “Benign” should not be rewritten as malignant cancer; nor does it, by itself, establish what care is appropriate for an individual.
What updates did Hamilton give about the tumor?
December 2017 scan, reported in 2018
In a first-person account published by The ASCO Post in 2018, Hamilton said a scan in December 2017 showed the tumor had become even smaller. That is a dated scan update, not confirmation of its present condition.
