The headline refers to VELMA, an adult animated series centered on Velma Dinkley—not a new cartoon about the whole Mystery Inc. gang. Warner Bros. Discovery announced it in 2021 as a humorous take on Velma’s past, with Mindy Kaling executive producing and voicing the title character. The company later announced a second season debuting April 25, 2024.
What is the Velma animated series?
VELMA is an adult animated comedy built around the Scooby-Doo franchise’s brainy mystery solver. Warner Bros. Discovery described it as an origin story about Velma Dinkley, calling her the “unsung and underappreciated brains” of the Mystery Inc. gang. The official description promised an “original and humorous spin” on the character’s past; it did not describe a team origin story.
Mindy Kaling was announced as both an executive producer and the voice of Velma. The announcement’s series description is Warner Bros. Discovery’s wording, not a quotation attributed to a named speaker. Gizmodo’s 2021 announcement coverage reproduces that description.
Did the series continue beyond its announcement?
Yes. Warner Bros. Discovery later announced a 10-episode second season, with the season set to debut April 25, 2024. That establishes that the project advanced beyond its original announcement. The pressroom listing is available at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Velma media releases.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is this the same project as Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins?
No. Netflix’s Scooby-Doo: Origins is a separate live-action ensemble project. Its official synopsis follows Shaggy and Daphne encountering a lost Great Dane puppy during their final summer at camp, with Velma and Fred joining the mystery. That premise, format, and ensemble focus do not describe the animated VELMA series. Netflix’s official Scooby-Doo: Origins page identifies the distinct project.
