Scary Movie (2000) is the strongest all-around entry, followed by Scary Movie 3 (2003) and Scary Movie 2 (2001). This is an editorial ranking, not a critics’ or audience-score consensus. It weighs joke consistency, how clearly the horror parody works, recurring characters and cast chemistry, and how much the comedy depends on recognizing its targets.
All six Scary Movie films, ranked
-
Scary Movie (2000)
The original takes the top spot for its combination of recognizable horror parody, recurring characters, and comedy that does not require viewers to catch every reference. Its place at number one is an editorial judgment, not a claim that it leads a verified franchise-wide review-score ranking.
-
Scary Movie 3 (2003)
The third film earns second place for a distinct run of horror and science-fiction parody. Paramount+ identifies The Ring and Signs among its targets. Those examples help explain the film’s range, though they are not a complete list of its references.
-
Scary Movie 2 (2001)
The sequel ranks third. It stays within the early run of the franchise, where recurring characters and cast chemistry are central to the appeal. It lands below the first and third films in this ordering, but remains a reasonable next pick for anyone who wants the original-era style.

Scary Movie 4 (2006)
The fourth film takes fourth place. Paramount+ names War of the Worlds, The Grudge, and Saw as examples of its parody targets. That mix gives viewers several recognizable horror and genre touchstones, but a long list of targets alone does not guarantee a stronger comedy.
-
Scary Movie (2026)
The sixth installment ranks fifth in this editorial order. Paramount describes the film as a return for Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, Anna Faris, and Regina Hall. Its official title is simply Scary Movie, so adding the year helps distinguish it from the 2000 original. Paramount’s August 19, 2026 announcement reported more than $230 million in worldwide grosses earlier that year; that studio-reported commercial figure is not a measure of how funny the film is.
-
Scary Movie V (2013)
The fifth entry comes last. Paramount+ says it introduced an all-new cast and characters, making it a franchise outlier rather than a continuation centered on the familiar returning ensemble. That shift is the clearest reason it may feel least like the early films.
How to choose what to watch
- Want the strongest starting point? Begin with Scary Movie (2000).
- Prefer a wider spread of parody targets? Try Scary Movie 3, then Scary Movie 4.
- Want the original run in release order? Watch the 2000, 2001, 2003, and 2006 films in that sequence.
- Curious about the cast change? Watch Scary Movie V (2013) as a standalone franchise variation, rather than expecting the same recurring cast.
- Interested in the latest reunion? The 2026 film is the sixth installment and brings back four familiar stars.
Release order and the 2026 version
The franchise’s release sequence is Scary Movie (2000), Scary Movie 2 (2001), Scary Movie 3 (2003), Scary Movie 4 (2006), Scary Movie V (2013), and Scary Movie (2026), according to Paramount+’s franchise guide. The service lists the 2026 film in a 1-hour-35-minute theatrical version and a 1-hour-44-minute extended cut; those are the versions listed by Paramount+ and availability can vary. Paramount announced that the film began streaming exclusively on Paramount+ on September 3, 2026. Check the service’s Scary Movie collection for current, territory-specific availability.
