Scarlett Johansson described The Outset as a skincare business she built with cofounder Kate Foster—not simply a company using her name. In 2022 interviews, she spoke about creating the brand, keeping her personal life off social media, and Colin Jost trying products at home. The brand later announced it would cease operations: EL PAÍS reported the closure notice on September 30, 2026.
Why Scarlett Johansson started The Outset
Johansson connected the idea for The Outset to her own experience with sensitive skin and to thinking about what she wanted from both skincare and business. She developed the venture with Kate Foster. In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, Johansson described wanting to build a community around the brand rather than simply license her name.
That distinction shaped her role: she wanted to take part in telling the brand’s story and speaking with customers, while retaining control over how much of her private life she made public.
What Johansson said about social media and privacy
Johansson said she felt pressure to create personal social-media accounts as a way to promote The Outset. “Obviously it’s a really important tool for people just to discover the brand story, and so I did have a lot of pressure to start my own social media channel…or accounts? I’m so out of the loop,” she told Vanity Fair in February 2022.

She drew a line between participating in brand content and routinely sharing private details: “I am really excited to create content for The Outset and be involved in our brand in that way. I’m curious about interacting with the consumer and being a part of those conversations. But I don’t need to share pictures of my breakfast in order to do that.” Her comments describe the approach she wanted at the time, not a claim about every account or platform she may use now.
Which The Outset products did Colin Jost try?
Johansson discussed Jost’s use of two products in separate 2022 interviews. In an Allure interview published April 27, 2022, she said he used the eye cream regularly: “He was the first one to use it regularly,” and “He’s been using it secretly for a year.” In the Vanity Fair interview, she said he liked the line cream. These are her accounts of his preferences, not product-performance claims.

She also recalled asking Jost to test an early clay mask without warning him that it could create a tingling sensation. In a CBS News interview, Johansson said he thought he might be having an allergic reaction. She called him her “skin care guinea pig”; the anecdote is a personal recollection, not clinical evidence about the mask’s safety or how others would react.

The Outset’s launch-era scale should not be confused with its present availability. Allure described an initial lineup of five products in 2022, and Forbes reported in July 2022 that the brand was available in more than 500 Sephora locations in the United States at that time.

EL PAÍS reported on September 30, 2026, that The Outset had announced on September 28 that it would cease operations. The report said online purchases were no longer available and that existing orders would continue to be processed. The 2022 product and retail details are historical; they do not establish current stock, store availability, or what happened to unsold products.
