Nelson, announced by Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster on September 24, 2026. The setback behind the “devastating update” headline was real, but it concerned an earlier plan: Lionsgate removed Saw XI from its 2025 release slate. The new announcement does not confirm a final title or release date.
What is the latest Saw 11 update?
Mike P. Nelson will direct the next Saw installment. TheWrap reported that Lionsgate and Blumhouse Atomic Monster announced his appointment on September 24, 2026. The announcement names Gregory Weidman and Geoff Tock as writers, with James Wan, Jason Blum, and Leigh Whannell among the producers. TheWrap’s announcement report also reproduces comments from the filmmakers and Lionsgate.
That is a sign of forward movement after the previous Saw XI plan stalled. It does not establish that the new film will use the earlier project’s script or continue from it.
Why was the update called devastating?
On March 24, 2025, TheWrap reported that Lionsgate removed Saw XI from its release slate. The film had been scheduled for September 26, 2025; The Strangers — Chapter 2 took that slot instead. The report linked the removal to previously reported irreconcilable creative differences among producers of the earlier project, but that does not establish why the newly announced film has its current direction. TheWrap’s 2025 report quoted a Lionsgate statement attributed to Billy the Puppet: “I’ve seen the rumors. They say it’s Game Over. You all should know me better than that. The game is never over.”

Is the new movie actually called Saw 11?
“Saw 11” is a useful shorthand for the franchise’s next film, not a confirmed final title. TheWrap reported that the teaser script is labeled “Untitled Saw.” Neither that label nor the numbering in coverage confirms what the released movie will be called.
When does Saw 11 come out, and what is it about?
The September 2026 announcement coverage does not give a release date, cast list, or plot synopsis. The former September 26, 2025 date belonged to the removed project and should not be treated as a current target or a prediction.

James Wan has described the kind of horror he hopes to pursue: “One of the things I really want to do with this next Saw is make it scary again. I want to make a scary Saw—not just gory, but psychologically scarring, like what Leigh and I did in the first movie.” GamesRadar quoted Wan’s remarks from a Letterboxd interview on January 28, 2026. They describe his creative intent, not a confirmed account of the finished film’s story or style. Read GamesRadar’s report on Wan’s comments.
