Yes—Satyajit Ray deserves to be remembered as a major Indian writer of macabre and supernatural fiction, even though horror was only one part of a much wider body of work. Calling him “one of India’s best” is a literary judgment, not a settled ranking; the case rests on the range of his uncanny stories and their continued publication in English collections.
Was Satyajit Ray a horror writer?
He was a writer across genres, and horror was among them. The Satyajit Ray Society says that between 1961 and 1992 he wrote more than 75 stories, alongside his Feluda detective fiction and Professor Shonku tales. It describes his interests as including science and crime fiction, the fantastic and the supernatural. That range matters: Ray’s short fiction should not be mistaken for a single-genre horror catalogue. The Ray Society’s account of his fiction also notes that Professor Shonku first appeared in the Bengali children’s magazine Sandesh in 1965; the Society records 38 Shonku stories, with the final story, ‘Intelectron’, unfinished. Shonku is part of Ray’s science-fiction writing, not evidence that the whole sequence is horror.
Publishers describe the horror directly. Penguin’s Collected Short Stories says Ray’s fiction often explores the macabre and supernatural, while its Indigo collection presents supernatural, peculiar and inexplicable stories alongside fantasy, adventure and comedy. Those are useful descriptions of what the books contain, not proof of a formal critical consensus.
What makes Ray’s horror worth reading?
Ray’s uncanny stories move between different kinds of unease rather than relying on one formula. A curse and bodily transformation drive ‘Khagam’; ‘Fritz’ and ‘Indigo’ are among the supernatural tales included in his collections; ‘Big Bill’ turns an ordinary chick into something increasingly large and fierce; and ‘The Hungry Septopus’ brings a carnivorous plant into the mix. In Penguin’s description of ‘Indigo’, a traveler’s night in an abandoned bungalow becomes connected to events more than a century earlier. These brief hooks come from the publisher’s summaries, so they indicate the stories’ premises rather than a full account of their plots. Penguin’s description of Indigo: Selected Stories gives further examples.

The contrast in those premises is part of the appeal: the uncanny can begin with an animal, an old building or an encounter, then unsettle what seemed ordinary. The stories also sit comfortably beside humor, fantasy, adventure and science fiction. That mixture makes Ray a distinctive choice for readers who want strange and supernatural fiction without expecting every story to follow the conventions of a dedicated horror anthology.
Which Ray horror stories should you start with?
- ‘Khagam’: A strong first pick if you like curses and supernatural transformation. Penguin’s summary says that killing a sadhu’s pet snake brings a curse and bodily changes.
- ‘Indigo’: Try this for an abandoned-house setting and an uncanny link to the past. Penguin describes a traveler spending a night in a deserted bungalow and encountering a chilling sequence tied to events more than a century earlier.
- ‘Fritz’: A credible supernatural pick included in both Penguin’s Collected Short Stories and the contents highlighted for Indigo.
- ‘Big Bill’: A strange, escalating premise about a chick that grows larger and fiercer.
- ‘The Hungry Septopus’: A good choice for an imaginative, creature-centered story; Penguin describes it as involving a carnivorous plant.
- ‘Anath Babu’s Terror’: The clearest haunted-house starting point in One Dozen Stories, which the publisher describes as a ghost hunter’s visit to a haunted house.
These are starting points, not a definitive ranking of Ray’s horror fiction. The available publisher descriptions identify examples but do not establish a comprehensive list of every horror story or a critical ranking.

How should Ray’s place in Indian horror be judged?
“One of India’s best” is a persuasive critical claim, not a measurable fact established by a published ranking in these sources. A more careful conclusion is that Ray belongs in any serious account of Indian supernatural and macabre short fiction: his work spans multiple kinds of the uncanny, and publishers continue to present dedicated and broader collections of it in English. Readers can assess the claim for themselves by starting with a focused anthology or sampling the stories in a broader collection.
Ray also described writing as a pleasure distinct from filmmaking: “I enjoy writing stories for its own sake and derive a pleasure from it which is quite distinct from the pleasure of the vastly more intricate business of making a film,” he said, as quoted by the Ray Society. The remark is a useful reminder that his fiction merits attention on its own terms.
