Speaking with former colleague Hoda Kotb, Guthrie grew tearful as she described the family’s anguish, the scene at her mother’s home and her hope that someone with information would come forward. The interview did not identify who took Nancy or establish why she disappeared.
When did Savannah Guthrie’s first interview air?
The two-part conversation with Hoda Kotb aired on TODAY on March 25 and 26, 2026. CBS announced the interview on March 25, saying it would air Thursday and Friday. CBS News’ coverage and The Associated Press’ account reported on Guthrie’s remarks.
What made the conversation emotional?
Guthrie spoke about the pain of not knowing what had happened to her 84-year-old mother. In a preview quoted by CBS, she said, “We are in agony. We are in agony,” and appealed for help: “Someone needs to do the right thing.” The AP reported that Guthrie also addressed her mother directly, saying, “I’m so sorry, Mommy. I’m so sorry.”
Her emotion was tied to imagining what Nancy might have gone through and to the uncertainty facing the family. Guthrie described wanting answers and asking anyone with information to come forward; she did not claim to know who was responsible.

What did Guthrie say the family found at Nancy’s home?
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of January 31, 2026, and reported missing on February 1. Recalling what the family found, Savannah said the back doors were propped open and her mother’s phone and purse were inside. The AP also reported her account that there was blood on the front doorstep and a camera had been pulled off.
Authorities believed Nancy had been taken from her Tucson-area home. That was an investigative belief, not a finding established by Guthrie’s interview. The interview described the family’s account of the scene but did not establish a perpetrator or explain what happened afterward.

Did Guthrie say why her mother was taken?
No. Guthrie wondered whether Nancy could have been targeted because of her daughter’s public profile, but said the family did not know whether that was the reason. The interview offered no confirmed motive, and speculation about one should not be treated as fact.
At the time of the March 25 coverage, CBS reported that authorities had named no suspects or persons of interest. That is a time-specific report, not a statement of the investigation’s status today. The interview itself did not resolve the case.

What else was known about the case at the time?
CBS reported that the family had offered a $1 million reward. That was a case-specific reward reported in 2026, not evidence that investigators had identified a suspect or motive. The central facts in the interview remained the family’s distress, the account of Nancy’s home and an appeal for anyone with information to speak up.
As subsequent context, the AP reported that Savannah Guthrie returned to the TODAY anchor desk on April 6, 2026. Her return came after the first interview and does not change what that conversation established about Nancy’s disappearance.
