Satyajit Ray found Chunibala Devi for the role of Indir Thakrun through a recommendation from Reba Devi, who had already been cast as Shejo Thakrun. Ray and his collaborators visited Chunibala at her daughter’s home in Paikpara. Her appearance suited the part, her memory impressed him, and she readily accepted the demands of outdoor filming. Her experience and instincts also helped make Indir feel lived-in rather than merely aged by makeup.
How Ray heard about Chunibala Devi
By Ray’s account, most of the cast for Pather Panchali had been selected, but Indir Thakrun remained a key role to fill. The production wanted an older woman whose appearance matched Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s description of the character, and Ray did not want to rely on makeup to make a younger performer look old. The team also had practical concerns: could an elderly actor manage long days on location, and would she be able to remember her lines?
Reba Devi, who played Shejo Thakrun, told Ray about Chunibala Devi. In his 1955 essay “Orofe Indir Thakrun,” as translated by Gopa Majumdar and excerpted by Scroll in 2021, Ray recalled that Chunibala was known as Nibhanoni Devi’s mother and had worked in theatre before acting in two silent films. He and his collaborators obtained her address and went to see her one Sunday morning at her daughter’s home in Paikpara.
Why her visit convinced the production
She fit the character without aging makeup
Ray described Chunibala’s look as a strong match for Indir. His account distinguishes the character’s age from the actress’s: he refers to Indir as a character of about 75, while Scroll’s introduction and the official Satyajit Ray site’s production history describe Chunibala as 80. Those are source-attributed figures, not a single independently established age for both woman and character.

Chunibala understood why the filmmakers wanted her rather than a young actress transformed with makeup. As Ray quoted her, “Since you have chosen me instead of a young actress simply made up to look like an old woman, I can see what you’re really interested in doing.”
A nursery rhyme put Ray’s concern about memory to rest
Ray asked whether she knew rhymes or could recite poetry. Chunibala answered with “Ghoom parani maashi pishi,” a nursery rhyme whose length surprised him. The recitation reassured him that she could retain material for the role.

She accepted the location schedule
Ray explained the work plainly: the company would leave at six in the morning, travel to a village fifteen miles away, shoot through the day, and return by car. Chunibala’s answer was “Certainly!” The distance and schedule here are details Ray gave while testing whether she could manage the work, not a general account of every shooting day.
How Chunibala shaped Indir on screen
Ray later recalled that Chunibala grasped the film’s interest in realism. When given a plain, torn white sari, she kept wearing her older, more threadbare one even after the production offered a less damaged replacement. Her choice helped the costume feel like something Indir would actually have worn.

She also objected to the plan for Indir’s death in a bamboo grove on religious grounds. Ray explained that the scene was meant to show the effect of her death on Apu and Durga; after that explanation, she raised no further objection. Her participation was not simply a matter of fitting the casting description: her own judgment and commitment contributed to the character.
Ray later put the importance of finding her starkly: “While working with Chunibala Devi, I kept thinking just one thing: if we hadn’t found her, Pather Panchali would never have been made.” The line comes from his recollection in “Orofe Indir Thakrun,” translated by Gopa Majumdar in Speaking of Films and excerpted by Scroll.

What the production record confirms
The official Satyajit Ray site places Chunibala’s casting in its 1952 production account, identifies her as a retired theatre actress, and names Boral as the film’s principal location. It also says early shooting began on 27 October 1952, while Ray was still seeking financial backing. This chronology corroborates her place in the production, while the recommendation, home visit and audition details come from Ray’s own later recollection.
In a 1970 interview republished by the BFI, Ray connected his confidence in location shooting and an amateur cast to seeing Vittorio De Sica’s Bicycle Thieves in London in 1950. He said, “I had the proof that one could shoot out there, in all kinds of light.” That provides context for the film’s approach, though it does not make the Italian film the sole cause of Pather Panchali’s style.

Watch Pather Panchali
Criterion’s Apu Trilogy Collector’s Set includes Pather Panchali, Aparajito and Apur Sansar; the page lists 4K UHD plus Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD editions. Criterion Channel also lists the film. Formats, stock and viewing access can vary by territory and change over time.
