Savannah Chrisley said she hoped her parents’ April 19, 2024, court hearing would help bring them home. It was oral argument before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit—not a trial—and the judges did not grant the new trial Todd and Julie Chrisley’s lawyer sought. The court later upheld their convictions but sent Julie’s sentence back for a limited recalculation.
What did Savannah Chrisley say about her parents’ appeal?
Savannah discussed attending the hearing in episode 81 of her podcast, Unlocked, published April 23, 2024. The episode description called it “My Recap of Todd & Julie Chrisley’s Appeal in Federal Court.” The hearing had taken place in Atlanta the previous Friday.
ABC News reported that Savannah saw the hearing as a step toward getting her parents home. She also said, “I believe we should have a system that holds people accountable, but the government needs to be held accountable as well.” That was her view of the case, not a finding by the court. ABC News’ April 19, 2024 report said the oral argument lasted about 30 minutes. Todd and Julie were not in the courtroom; they reportedly listened to the proceedings by livestream from prison.
What happened at the Chrisleys’ appeal hearing?
The defense asked the appeals court for a new trial or other relief from the couple’s convictions and sentences. Attorney Alex Little argued that an IRS officer had testified falsely about whether the Chrisleys still owed taxes and that prosecutors knew, or should have corrected the testimony. Prosecutor Annalise Peters disputed that account, saying prosecutors were unaware of some tax payments when the testimony occurred while maintaining that taxes remained due.

Little also challenged evidence admitted at trial, the sufficiency of evidence for some counts, Julie’s role in the bank-fraud scheme, and restitution and forfeiture. These were arguments presented to the appellate judges; they were not proof that misconduct occurred. AP reported that Judge Robin Rosenbaum appeared skeptical of the defense’s claim of a conspiracy between prosecutors and the IRS officer. How the hearing differed from the earlier post-trial motions
The appeal followed an earlier round of post-trial challenges. In a January 18, 2023 order, the federal district court denied the Chrisleys’ motions for a new trial and acquittal and rejected their request to reconsider. The order addressed their allegations about IRS officer Betty Carter’s testimony and evidence they said had been unlawfully obtained. Did Todd and Julie Chrisley win their appeal?
No. The Eleventh Circuit upheld the convictions. It did find a legal error in the calculation of Julie’s sentence and sent that issue back to the district court for resentencing. The appellate result was therefore limited: it did not overturn the convictions or produce a new trial. AP’s account of the appellate decision reports the outcome.

The later developments are separate from the appeal’s result. AP reported that President Donald Trump pardoned Todd and Julie Chrisley and that they were released in 2025. In June 2026, AP reported that the couple had filed a legal-malpractice lawsuit against their former defense counsel, seeking damages and alleging deficiencies in their representation. Those claims are allegations in a civil case; the filing does not establish that counsel or the firm is liable. AP’s June 2026 report covers the lawsuit and the pardons.
