Sara Haines was talking about playing the lawn game cornhole during a family vacation when the word prompted a surprised reaction from Whoopi Goldberg on The View. Haines clarified the joke with the line, “Not that cornhole.” The exchange, reported from the show’s September 3, 2024, season 28 premiere, was a moment of wordplay—not a reported argument.
What happened on The View?
During a story about a family vacation in Hilton Head, Haines described spending time with her parents, siblings, their partners and children. As Joey Nolfi reported for Entertainment Weekly in an article republished by AOL, Haines had just reflected on wanting to have a family of her own to keep the closeness of her original family going, using the word “procreating.” She then said the group spent a lot of time playing cornhole.
Goldberg reacted to the word, and fellow co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin said it sounded sexual. Haines explained that she meant the game, describing bean bags tossed toward a wooden board with a hole. She added that her 82-year-old father regularly beat the family, then delivered the punchline: “Not that cornhole.” Goldberg turned toward the camera and sent the show to commercial, according to Nolfi’s account.
Why did Whoopi Goldberg react?
The joke came from the timing: “cornhole” followed Haines’s reference to procreating, making the ordinary name of a lawn game sound suggestive for a moment. Haines’s clarification made clear that she was describing the family activity, not making a serious or provocative announcement. The report portrays Goldberg’s response as comic surprise, not a dispute.

What is cornhole?
Cornhole is the bean-bag toss game Haines described: players throw bags toward a raised board with a hole. In her vacation story, the family played a tournament over several days. The article’s specific account of the board, tournament and her father’s wins comes from Nolfi’s reporting.
