The dating timeline is not precise. People reported in December 2015 that they had been together for “a couple months,” as summarized by Harper’s Bazaar. But in a New York Times interview reported by ABC News in March 2016, Paulson said they had been dating for a little over a year. People reported the relationship in December 2015, and the two appeared together at the Broadway opening of School of Rock. On January 17, 2016, they made what Harper’s Bazaar identifies as their first red-carpet appearance as a couple at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
In March 2016, Paulson spoke directly about the relationship in a New York Times interview. ABC News quoted her saying: “What I can say absolutely is that I am in love, and that person happens to be Holland Taylor.” She also described “a poignancy to it, and a heightened sense of time and the value of time.”

Paulson acknowledged Taylor during her 2016 Emmy acceptance speech, a moment Harper’s Bazaar includes among the couple’s public milestones. Later coverage has also recorded public messages of support and comments about their work and influence on one another.
In 2018, Paulson told Town & Country, as quoted by Harper’s Bazaar: “My choices in life have been unconventional, and that’s my business.” She also described the relationship as representing “a certain amount of hope and risk.” Those comments express Paulson’s own perspective, rather than a general claim about relationships with an age difference.

In a 2020 conversation with Roxane Gay, Paulson reportedly said she and Taylor each had a house in Los Angeles and alternated between them every few days. That is a dated description of their arrangement at the time; it does not establish where or how they live now.

These are biographical comparisons, not a measure that explains the relationship. Taylor acknowledged the age difference in 2015, and Paulson has described her choices as her own.
