Her slow, bluesy interpretation drew mixed reactions in the arena and criticism online; the Associated Press described the performance as a moment of controversy, not a universally disliked one. Fergie said afterward that she had aimed for something special but had not struck the intended tone.
What happened during Fergie’s national anthem performance?
Fergie performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of the NBA All-Star Game in Los Angeles on February 18, 2018. The NBA’s archived video listing identifies the performance and event, though the page warns that its content may not be available in every viewing context.
The Associated Press characterized the rendition as slow and bluesy, with an unconventional vocal delivery and accompaniment. Those descriptions capture the artistic choices that stood out; they are not an objective measure of whether the singing was good or bad.
How did people react?
According to AP reporter Greg Beacham, a low chuckle followed the opening line, and reactions in the arena varied. The performance also drew criticism on social media. The account noted a strong finish and cheers when Fergie called, “Let’s play some basketball!” afterward. These reported responses show a divided reception, not a tally of what every spectator thought.

AP noted Draymond Green’s visible reaction, Charles Barkley’s joke during TNT’s halftime show, and Shaquille O’Neal’s defense of the performance. They are examples of public commentary, not a measure of overall opinion.

What did Fergie say about the performance?
In a statement reported by the Associated Press on February 20, Fergie said she had wanted to try something special for the NBA. She acknowledged the result missed her intention: “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone.” She added, “I love this country and honestly tried my best.” The statement was Fergie’s response; the AP report does not say that the NBA or its officials apologized.
Where can you watch the performance?
The NBA maintains an official archive page titled “Fergie Sings National Anthem.” It is the direct destination for the performance, but the page notes that the video may not be available. Greg Beacham’s contemporaneous Associated Press report on Fergie’s response provides the event context and her statement.
